Well I'm not trying to be harsh or anything but from the experience and a few comments that I've got, the competition is rather biased. I mean the judges are not that really open to other genres. Playing mainstream stuff such as My Chemical Romance, Blink 182, Sum 41 or maybe some older stuff from Guns N Roses and Metallica would probably give you a better chance.
But if your band were to play something a bit more harder, heh it's better that you pack your bags and just go jamming at BMC. Even though the vocalist can be clearly understood with his or her clean singing, the judges will always think that the distortion is just to noisy. And even if you do rack up some kind of insane solo, man what a waste of effort.
But what have been said above is just coming from me with the experience and info from others. Maybe there are others who have a different senario. I only wished that the ITE organizers would do a mixed genre gig instead of a band competition. IMO that would be more happening.
Heres an inside info, currently there people from the local scene studying in ITE. Some of these guys are from Dyna Turmoil, Mistaken Pirates, Shadows Embrace, Jackalhyde, Dark Resurrection, Exuberence and tons more. See, wouldn't it be nice if there was an ITE joint campus gig?
