Figuratively.

On a more serious note, a truss rod allows you to adjust the relief on the neck by countering the tension caused on the neck by the strings.

Sometimes truss rod adjustments need to be made as time goes on, and when string gauge changes as well.
Without it, it'd be almost impossible to have a playable guitar. Hope this helps.
