Is there an age limit to start playing the guitar

My apology I started this thread.

Someone mentioned that at 43 can still play guitar since he learnt it at 12.

I think to learn guitar at age 20+ or 30+, it is better to have a private tution at home. if not people laugh at u, if u go to a music school.

The other problem I still think is that the hands are not so flexible.

There are advantages to starting older, cos for one, you're more focused about achieving your goals. Its not as if you're forced to learn it, and you have to motivate yourself, which may sometimes encourage improvement.

Not all of us here are born super-dexterous, more often than not it comes out of constant practice and hard work. Finger exercises and proper technique will carry you a long way. Speed should not be your benchmark at least for now, but accurate fingering/picking and good timing. There are numerous threads on how to do this, so do a search.

Btw, I don't think its that embarassing la, more often than not younger kids look up to older chaps like us, whether or not u have skill or not. I guess most of us still respect elders la. But I agree that private tuition might be better if you intend to pickup faster.

It's never too old to learn something new. :P

Hmm 20 plus not old? True la, but i dunno why, I walk around in shopping centre after awhile sure have to find somewhere to sit. Old man la. haha

I have a good friend who have just started playing the guitar for about a year or so and he is now in his late 20 or early 30s. He is much better than someone that i know who has played for 10 years!

It's all about how much you are commited to practising and learning something new. Learning a instrument is never easy, blessed are those gifted but many good guitarist I know of are based on pure hardwork with a flaming passion for music and playing guitar.

Instead of worring about age, you should think of how much time and effort can you spend on learning, do you have 2 hrs or at least 1 hr a day for practise? spending more time to train the 'not so flexible' fingers? Working adult while has the money to splurge but has the least time when it comes to hobby, that the most disadvantage i can think of.

Don't lost the war when it haven't even started.

hi mike, u said u old ? haha ... think purplehaze and myself much older ... we'r over 40s ... but we still rocking and learning ... esp learning for me since i've pick up guitar after a very long period of absence ... kekeke.

there's no limit as to what age cannot learn ... whatever ... as long as u still tap/nob/snap to the beat of music, u in the mood ... it's always nice to pick up an instrument to play along ...

so dont fret ... as long as u still alive and kicking ... just do it (not the nike way) ... hahahaha ...

\m/ on brudder !!!
