is it true that some people just can't sing?

I think anyone can sing, given proper training and practice..
I'm not so sure about tone-deaf issues tho :/

There are people who really can't sing and there are people who can be train to do better. I'm going to give you an honest remark. From the video you have that 'stress' singing. You don't fall in the category of those who can't sing. But you can do better. There are part of your voice that sounded nice but majority it doesn't to anyone to listen.

Ok, relax yourself while singing. Don't stretch too much and don't get stressed up. It'll take time to develop good habits in singing. It seemed you've got that bad habit in stretching the notes. Listen to the original CD and try to imitate. Once you've got it, you can sing your own style.

Enjoy and good luck!

^ What he said.. lol sorry was waiting for your vid to load just now..

If it's really hard, why not choose and easier song to sing first? I think the song's a little off your calibre; it's not one of the easiest songs..

It's true that perhaps 0.001% of people cannot sing. These are the ones with physical problems, either congenital or from injury. But you are not one of them :) So yes, you can sing.

Do you notice how when you reach for a high note, your larynx goes up (watch the video) and your mouth opens up into a "smile" type position? This is called "spread production" or "high larynx singing" or "pulling chest" or many other names. Basically it means you are squeezing your throat to increase your pitch. This also distorts your vowels, increases the air pressure required to sing and generally makes your voice sound strained (and feel strained).

There's another option which is using your inner larynx muscles to increase the pitch, and keeping your throat relaxed. Take a look at this guy (Thom Yorke of Radiohead):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OS1U8LjjZw

He's singing an octave above you, but he's not reaching up for the notes, he's just singing them straight out. It's not because his voice is any different to yours either, it's just because he's learnt to sing without tension.

As for how to achieve that .. my experience is that you need a good teacher. I tried for many years to learn on my own, and it's not easy!

judging from some ppl I 've heard in the karaoke lounges..the answer should be a resounding;

YES!

hahas~well.karaoke lounges arent exactly a gd estimate of one's singing capabilities though.it' only fufills a estimate. yea.with proper training of self vocals. u dont need a teacher.or any fancy stuff.just u and yr lyrics. this only applies for 'smart' people and it's a no-brainer. cheers.

If you're lucky, you don't need a teacher. Even the best singers in the world have teachers, and I wouldn't say they aren't smart.

Anyone can sing. You just need someone to guide you in the right direction unless you are REALLY talented. Keep practising! Perfect practice makes perfect.

The thing with singing is that you can only make use with what you're born with. Unlike instruments, you cant buy a new vocal chord with a different tone and a better range(think 6string basses). Yes, its true that proper training can help a great deal in terms of singing(breathing, projection etc), but theres a limitation in which one can increase their range and tone through training.

But if you inspire to be a singer, dont give up though. You may not be able to sound like Axl rose or hav the range of Mariah Carey but im sure most people have the potential to sing well enough to be sonically pleasant.

Ever watch American Idol? Lots, and i mean LOTS of people cant sing. Tho i think you have the potential, but im no Simon Cowell so i dont know.

Cheers

This is true, but ...

Most people don't use their vocal instrument properly. The cause of their poor tone and limited range is not that they are incapable of singing, just that they don't know how to sing and need to be taught.

(Also what the person directly above me said)

I have been reading a couple of websites, forums, and articles and ultimately, that is what I have been hearing

Everyone does have the ability to sing in tune (unless tone deaf) and pleasantly enough.
Everyone has a unique voice (that can be a crap voice or angelic voice), and training will merely train that unique voice. So if one had a "crap" voice to begin with, then training will only help make that voice sound "musical" but not necessary pleasant sounding. Take Bob Dylan for example. imo he doesn't have a good voice, but beauty is in the eye/ear of the beholder.

everyone can sing.
just keep singing you'll get better.
and like the person above said, some people will like your voice some people won't, oh well.
if you want to sing english you might want to work on your pronounciation first.

Yeah! you know the guy who sings chocolate rain on youtube, to me, that guy can't sing, but there have been rave comments on the video itself about how "unique" his voice is. IMO, you just have to find that uniqueness in you be it having an intructor to guide you or trying it out youself... lol yeah haha

Think along the line when you want to sing well / better, or you wan to sing and become a star or be famous. These are 2 different things.

I doubt most people want to sing and become famous, if you basics is not correct. If you correct some of the mistakes you have, you will improve gradually. Whether your voice can be unique... well talk after you sound Ok first.

Most singers came out that way, they arent good at singing at first. Probably hv foundation in music or they are just pretty or handsome.

so many posts and not much useful advice.. get a teacher, BEST way hands down

that radiohead comparison is like comparing apples to oranges. thomas yorke's singing in falsetto -___-
