Is having a band leader necessary?

not really necessary if the whole band has the same aspects and wish for the band, but if one has different thinking or thinks of more highly aspects, then perhaps yes a band leader is necessary.

yes, because a band isn't a democracy, it's a dictatorship. If you want to get somewhere, having a good band leader is paramount.

we're here to have fun but apparently we're going somewhere as well , what happened to the good old hippie days hahah . I feel that everyone in a band should put in effort to help improve and move on , of course a millitary band needs a good leader , i would know that cause i was from st pats and i don't think any concert/millitary band comes close to ours haha but im talking about rock and roll bands here

but there is for sure a guy who always arranges the jamming session, books the studio and smses everyone about it and makes sure everyone is there on time by constantly smsing everyone and stuff

I agree not in leadership..but more into rules and guidelines.....

for me some people take it as leader = big egos

So no leadership but more discipline...can't have everybody go crazy,nuts and loud at the same time

here's the modal system haha that i work with , just hear me out . since we always hang out together , the studio problem is no issue to us , besides since we jam at ebenex only they guys there already booked the studio the whole week for us , we just cancel out the dates we cant make it . All the members give ideas on what song to cover and then with closer discussion we throw out songs that are not suitable and then get to work . during gigs , we take turns to volunteer the car to get us to that location or we share a cab , writing songs is free to everyone , as long as it is a good idea , its in !

I think it is absolutely necessary. The democratic model in a band may sound ideal, but each member will develop his own musical interests/leanings, as well as motivations for being in a band as time goes by(no matter how hard you swear to be a follower of this style etc.) and the band members will end up walking in their own directions(band splits up).

I think its really necessary well. in my band, me and the other guitarists are the frontmen. not frontman. frontmen., because we like to work in a team. so i guess it works both ways. depends on your band itself. but yes it is quite important IMHO.
