Hi people.

I'm setting up a home-studio where I plan to invest in M-audio Project-mix I/O and Protools M-powered. Reason is because I'm more comfortable working with Protools. Reason for choosing m-audio instead of digidesign hardware is because of my budget. Reason that I'm getting ProjectMix I/O is because I want the hardware mixer control touch/feel. Not really comfortable with using the mouse and software mixer. And ProjectMix also provide the numbers of inputs and outputs that I'm looking for. It cost $2200 for ProjectMix and $525 for protool M-powered, both form sinamex.

But because ProjectMix I/O is a new product and I've also heard people complaining about other M-Audio firewire interfaces and soundcard, hence, I'm not sure is it worth it. Anyone here willing to give me some opinions on this pls??

Hi
Most important is u like to use it. Anything u need to try and decide. Everyone has their own opinion of choosing what hardware and software they want. If everything is within your budget then u can go for it. :)

i have a m-audio firewire 410 , pair of bx5a monitors, m-audio condensor. and m-powered pro tools. they've been with me for almost a year, no problems ;). im satisfied with them haha.. i think m-audio is rather reliable n stable.

if you are not stuck on PT you could check out Tascam FW1884. Should be ard S$2500 with Cubase LE thrown in. Also if you are not stuck on having 8 faders, you should check out other configurations, i.e. audio interface (with same i/o options) + the Presonus Faderport. Lots of interface comes with software like Cubase LE nowadays. Do you really need 8 faders or is it because it looks more impressive? Personally I find when "fader riding", all I can manage is one channel at a time. Physical faders are convenient for fast rides, but one still needs to return to the mouse to edit the curve afterwards.

personally if i had $2k to spare i'd consider one of the yamaha audio workstations.. eg the aw16g or its bigger brothers.. portable and good quality. only limitation is expandibility but u can always still hook it up to your computer.

Go with the protools and project mix I/O. should not give you any problems. However, choice of software is really personal. I will go with protools coz I find it easier to get things done and like the workflow better than cubase, audition, sonic or soundscape. The only downside I can think of when using protools is if you are dealing with long format programs. There is no way to export multitrack materials short of bouncing to disk or real time dump to tape. That suck coz you really got to wait one hour for a one hour material to get transferred. That aside, protools and project mix works well for me.

Regards
Robin

Save up and buy an MBox 2. Worth it. Trust me. This is only if you wanna do simple home kinda stuff. Be patient coz when you get that MBox, you'll never regret it..
