Erm, when you mean jazz... What kind of jazz? You can try a little of swing jazz. Frank Sinatra and Harry Connick Jr are great musicians you can listen to.

jazz came from ragtime, blues and ur military music. but that doesn't mean jazz is blues or the other way round. it is totally different. get ur facts rite.

btw i cant believe no one mention tuck andress. joe pass is a great jazz guitarist too. for good scat singers, try al jarreau and ella fitzgerald. for great jazz pianist, listen to art tatum, bill evans, chick corea and hiromi.

frank sinatra isn't really jazz btw. he sings jazz standards, work with jazz musicians but he is not really considered as jazz singer in the jazz community. he is more of a pop singer.

To the interested thread starter: first of all. please ignore the arguments.
now, let's talk bout beginning jazz guitars.

First things first,

While in the midst of listenin to jazz, do listen to the horns section as well. or rather, closely.
And then if you haven't got your blues right enough,

GO (!) Get Your Blues Right.

After which you would have easier understandin to jazz.

And believe it or not, JimiHendrix is very jazz-based too.

good luck! :D

Erm, I'm not asking you to listen to his singing(And yes, he has a great voice). The music of his songs has a lot of jazz influences.

no love for John McLaughlin???

And whilst we're at it...
Oz Noy
Frank Gambale
Scott Henderson

And very special honourable mention to Mimi Fox

You can check out some of these guitarists (especially Oz & Mimi) here: guitarplayertv.com

Music and/or the “genre” as they call it now is all about the “attitude” and not quite the musical instrument through which such attitude is “EMOTED”.

Double bass, YES – but NIL guitar herein. This would be a good “intro” to what a “classic” of jazz is. 5/4 was most certainly UNCOMMON back then.

It’d be BEST that one gets “settled and comfortable” with the “1-2-3-4” of good ol’ BLUES and/or what is rockNroll, and eerrr …. .. . etceteras that came later.

CHANGE can be a PAIN. Take people for what they are and there’s no particular need to …. .. .. .. eerrr ….

hey, thanks softies (Guitarist, fenderjazz, lou5y,dwaynetan,milkmesto) and those who provided to the slightest inputs of this thread.

i am trying very hard to listen to all the musicians that you guys had recommended. John Mclaughlin is cool. Currently i am lost in identifying types of jazz. E.g (swing jazz, latin jazz). Is there anymore sites to learn jazz guitar?

PS
To those who had arguments, i appreciate if you guys do not argue anymore over here. pls settle your disputes over PM. if possible, i hope those parties involved(whether right or wrong) could remove hostile comments by editing your posts :)

Whats up with these over-reactive kids?

Anyway check out the Brad Mehldau Trio. And they are coming to Singapore soon.
