Interested in playing electric guitar

Hi everyone. I have been hearing to DragonForce and some other metal bands and I am like influenced by the guitarists like Herman Li, Tom Morello and some other guitarists. I wanted to get an electric guitar but I don't know what to get. Any suggestions for me?

hmm so you like shreddy stuff huh...

a strat will be good for ya. and since you need the beef in your tone like morello as well, maybe a strat with a H-S-S (single single humbucker) pup configuration. like mine, which is an ibanez gsa60. you wanna buy it? selling for a 100 bucks only. pm if interested

cheers ;)

Just go to a guitar shop find a guitar with the design u like then u take it and try it if you like it buy it if not find another guitar if the price is to high then find another until you get a guitar that u like the design, u can afford and you like the sound then buy it.

mine's a fat strat!hahaha. although its a copy.. hmmm i will recommend you to buy starter packs for a start. once you become better, save up for better gear.

go to swee lee (in bras basah complex) and Davisguitar (peninsula plaza basement) and yamaha store (singapura plaza) and check out their starter packs. You might find something you like.

Since you r so influenced by dragonforce, it is better to buy a guitar with slimmer neck profile as their music requires a lot of shredding and if the neck is too thick, it will be difficult to play.. ibanez guitars are good. :)

test & choose a guitar according to your needs, recommendations are for considerations, you should not be obliged.

playing fast (aka shredding) isn't exclusive to slim-necked guitars, it's about ability; a slim-necked guitar enhances your ability, it's not an exclusive factor.

jackson guitars have great necks for shredding. jacksons almost play themselves ;)

ps don't get a guitar with a locking system to begin with - your rh will affect the pitch too much when you are starting out e.g. you may rest against the bridge and raise the pitch. this is common when beginners get a guitar with a locking system.

ps you should know that it will take you years before you will be able to play dragonforce etc

i get lots of students who want to play this kind of stuff (guitar hero influenced) - after 6 weeks of playing, when they realise that even changing chords is a nightmare, most of them give up

i say you should think seriously about whether you want to play, or whether you would rather just be a listener - which there is no shame in being.

if your sole goal is to play dragonforce, then i'd say forget it - it won't be worth the effort, and you will waste a lot of money on lessons.

play the guitar for guitar's sake - it's all good - everything from strumming to shredding. the joy is being creative with the instrument, whether it be playing chords at 60bpm, or shredding at 180bpm.

try not to close doors on yourself.

hmm about getting locking system guitars my friend got that as his 1st guitar a Ibanez JEM 555
and about shredding he managed to learn Euguene's trickbag by steve vai like 1 or 2 weeks and it was quite good.
Yes a lot of students give up but there can be exceptional ppl u know guitar prodigy u never know who they are. They can come from anywhere so yea don't always think hard stuff like dragonforce they are gonna take years to learn.
And my friend is 1 of them.

that's fine - if you think your friend can play eugenes trick bag pretty well after a couple of weeks, then so be it.

it's impossible to learn even just the chord theory (e.g. 6th/5th string root position shapes/chords) in that time, let alone barring, or anything that equates to theoretical knowledge/technical soundness.

in my experience, people who have a fixed idea about what they want to do usually quit just as quickly, once they realise it will take them a lot of time to reach the level they want to aspire to.

i'm trying to help the guy by making him realise this.

the best approach is wanting to play guitar, not wanting to play dragonforce.

it is akin to learning a foreign language in order to sing the words to just one song. the student would have to spend years learning grammar etc etc before they would even begin to understand the song.

Or, the only other option - your friend's approach - just copy, and don't understand a shred of what you are doing.

imagine you were singing the song in the foreign language having copy learned it, and a friend says 'what are you singing about' - you could only reply 'oh, i don't know'.

Now imagine the guitarist playing something, and a friend says 'what is the chord progression you are playing' - you could only reply 'oh, i don't know - i just put my fingers at certain places and it sounds right'.

Not exactly what i'd call learning.

PS don't think i'm getting down on the guy - i am trying to help him.

Contrary to that, you're being really nice, kudos to you. I'd have flipped at this guy long ago and have refrained from posting but seriously...

Listen to pianomankris, he knows his stuff, I doubted him before, did my research, always proved him right. Your friend is either lying or he played shit and passed it off as some Vai stuff. You can't learn shit in 2 weeks. I've been playing for 2 years and I still know peanuts, there is just SO MUCH to learn. Be humble, bow your head down and take in whatever information you can, people have been making music for thousands of years, if you think you can absorb a few thousand years of knowledge in weeks, prove it.

I was looking at the finger fast and not the understanding what your playing part. I mean to get to that speed in 1 or 2 weeks is amazing. and it's quite clean and he ain't lying because my eyes saw it
