Instrument/Guitar cable causing amp fuse to blow?

Hi folks,

I've recently bought a 2nd hand set of Evidence Audio Lyric instrument cables. Prior to this, I was using Bullet guitar cables with no problems. I am not sure if it is a coincidence, or bad luck, but it seems that since switching to the Evidence Audio, I've had to replace my fuse every 3-5 times I operate the amp.

The Evidence Audio cable is an instrument cable, and seems to be a microphone cable more than a guitar cable. However, I've asked around and it seems to be ok for guitar usage. Has anyone here heard of amplifiers getting blown by certain types of cables?

Thanks all!

p.s: Pardon me posting this same thread again, but I think the original post wasn't coming through. In any case, I'm desperate for some feedback! :(

Hi all,

just an update: I've changed the fuse, reverted to the Bullet cables, and lo and behold, the fuse blew again! I've been using a surge protector and I thought that could be the cause, but even after plugging it directly into the wall socket, it still blew. I guess there's something wrong internally with the amp.

Hope nobody else has to go through this frustrating episode.

Good luck, fellas!

Its the amp for sure.. Never heard of instrument cables blowing fuses as they barely carry current, let alone carry enough to blow the fuse of an amp.

Guys, thanks for the feedback. Since I was being attacked by a squadron of mosquitoes and spent the whole damn night scratching their bloody bites and trying to kill the little bastards, I decided to do some troubleshooting on the amp issue. Seems like the amp doesn't take too well to the surge protector power strip I bought from a DIY store.

I had a few spare fuses left, and in a sleep-deprived stupor, I went ahead and plugged in the amp into the power strip. The fuse didn't survive 3 cycles. I replaced the fuse, turned the amp on...waited about 5 minutes before switching it off, repeated the process for as long as the fuse would hold...4 cycles was all it handled.

So, I reverted back to the wall socket and lo and behold; touching wood and whatever tickled my pickle, the fuse held. Anybody else had any experience similar to this? Would getting one of those audiophile power regulator/voltage stablizers help?

Good morning!

Hi all,

I've bought another power strip (Tacima), or multi socket, whatever its called, and touch wood, seems like all's working fine. Guess I had a dud Belkin which somehow didn't make friends with the amp.

So, hopefully it is case closed and back to creating lots of noise!

Have a good week, all!

Glad to hear your amp is fine again man.. Have fun making noise haha.

Haha, thanks! It has been a hectic period of running around and being on tenterhooks each time I try to power up the amp. Now that the amp is working, the wife wishes it wasn't. :P
