Improving your singing voice

What are effective methods to improve one's singing voice?

Also, once you are able to hit the notes you want to hit, what should you improve on?

More important than hitting the notes you want to hit is tone, I think. If your voice conveys emotion, then that's what makes your voice appealing. That's what makes a singer great.

But no matter how sad you sound, if you don't have a singing voice, stick to karaoke and kbox.

And stay in that room.

My dear GDPunkRock, people ask for advice. I tell them honestly. I don't think its fair that they get advice and keep trying and trying, and after all that they think they're good and sing to others. In the end, they get rejected and will feel dejected.

My honest opinion is if people who know how to sing and what good singing sounds like tell you that you can't sing, accept it. Because if you deny that, then you're denying the fact that you have some other talent that God has given you. Different people have different talents. You can't be stubborn.

Of course, if you don't plan to join Singapore Idol or any competition for that matter, please go ahead and sing in Kbox etc. Its fine.

And GDPunkRock, look for threads where i've uploaded my covers and songs. You'd find i'm an average, if not good, singer.

I'm telling you this because there is no point putting up flowery language and being nice to you when it affects your own self esteem.

I'd rather break you now than a jeering crowd breaking you another time. Trust me the second is much more painful.

Okay, maybe I've been a bit harsh on my earlier comment about you,Khai.Just that the way you straightforwardly said "stick to karaoke" gave me the impression that if a person could not sing,he should just keep himself holed up or something...Which is not the case.As proven by many professional vocal instructors such as Brett Manning and his mentor(can't remember what name,he found SLS),singing is possible with anyone given the correct technique and so on.
Anyways,I've listened to some songs on your website, and found them good, given the standards in Singapore of course.I do apologise for my rather rude comment up there^ .

PS:Have you attended singing lessons or something?Just curious!

3 types
Born to sing
Not born to sing but can do that after training
not born to sing and still the same result after training.

Lol "not born to sing and still the same result after training" depends on said training. If given highly qualified training such as SLS,one can only blame oneself for not putting learnt skills to practise.Singing is like doing math, repetition is the key thing here.Since it's basically muscle memory, with enough practise,ANYONE,I repeat,ANYONE can sing.Undeniable.

No worries. I get that a lot. You're not the first.

Well, i haven't personally known anyone who can't sing, took up lessons and got better. However, I do know some people who are currently and are still taking SLS lessons, but still have no improvement. Personally, I've tried some of the SLS lessons online (which are free and simple) and it has, in a way or two, refined my voice and helped me maintained a consistent level of performance.

So, my stand still remains. If you can't sing, just stop trying to show off a talent that you obvious and clearly don't have. If you want to know whether you have it or not, send me a demo.

But, for those of you who have sent me demos, and i believe to have potential, trust me. I will help you out in ways that i can. Usually just guide and tips and advice, but nothing more.

And no, I haven't attended formal lessons. My family came from a background of singers and/or musicians. My granduncle and grandaunt were singers from the 60s (Eddie and Hamidah Ahmad). My uncle, Trisno Ishak, was the lead singer of UrbanExchange. At least 1/4 of the family is either a musician or singer. Generally everyone in the family can sing.

By the way, mind if i have a demo of you singing?

Well, my personal theory has 4:

1. Born to sing
2. Born to sing musicals
3. Sing karaoke with friends etc (non performance/competitive)
4. Keep quiet and do something else.

Dudes, the guy here is asking for WAYS to improve his singing, not whether one is born to sing or not!
Basically, i find the tutorials on youtube rather insightful, im not a professional singer but after using the warm up exercises such as lip rolling and using your diaphram to sing, i find my voice improving gradually (:

and yeap, practice makes perfect. Don't get disheartened by what the khia guy or whatever is trying to say, if you can't sing, SING.(well no one is born with an aweful voice, its just nice, and great) singing is not all about entertaining others, its just elongated speech. You have the desire, just go ahead with it.

oh and you must be wondering how to sing with ur diaphram(if you don't know already). well, i'll explain a bit here but you will have to search elsewhere if you want to learn it well. Basically , you don't breathe the air into ur chest, breathe, and feel ur stomach bulging. Thats using ur diaphram. Sing with ur stomach bulged, filled with air, you will have a much powerful voice (:

Thats what i think guys

redishot, thank you for your reference to me.

if i may, send me a demo of your best singing.

and may the starter of this thread, send me a demo too. thanks.

if i think you got potential, i will stop attacking you.

until then, stop singing.

Chill chill

Hey guys,

Forums are meant to express your own opinions yet, but i think there's no need to start a flame war over this ;)

But still, to the user "KhaiHan", you're really being an insensitive shitbag like mentioned ^. Some of the stuff you mentioned like letting you see if they got potential is just way off IMO. Even if you do let them know that would just be your personal opinion, the opinion of " one small insignificant figure in the music scene ". just like this is as well my 2 cents worth.

To the thread starter, all the best in your quest to singing well! If you ask me, the internet and youtube in particular is always the best place to source for info :) but make sure you absorb selective material only.
