Improving alternate picking?

Hi guys, this week I was trying out on a lick from Journey's Don't stop believing.

It is the lick that Neal Schon started somewhat moderately fast, then he speeds up to legatos. I checked guitar pro and read a guitar techniques issue on this. For the moderately fast part, Neal picked the notes in sixteenths. I tried that and use the metronome. It seems that I could not alternate pick that part past 80bpm. Actual Song is played at around 120bpm. Any help on this?

haha, well, the usual thing is to practice, practice and practice by slowly going faster and faster with the metronome speed
u could also pick with lesser parts of the pick so as to move up and down faster
good luck with that :)

Practice is key, but i cheated my way through by using a delay and tapping instead of alt picking xD

loosen the grip on the pick, but still make sure the pick does nt slip out of your hand, use 2.0 picks, they dont bend easy so it makes it easier for alternate picking

hmmm no shortcut if u really wanna nail the alternate picking(or anything on guitar). go slow and work ur way to speed, but make sure u're not flexing ur shoulders by the time u hit top speed. u should be as relaxed as when u were crawling up the neck
