Ibanez Valbee

bought one- very happy with it. wishing that there would be a bigger driver version in time to come  if you wanna get one, do hurry, this initial batch has limited quantities...

Tried it a whole 30 min with my friend. The 8' speakers doesn't do the 6L6s justice. Clean tone too soft (at vol 10, with mids bumped and bass bumped). I don't really think it will do metal. Though it should pass the hard rock test. Not enough gain. But for $299 as sub said, quite a good buy compared to solid states out there. It even has an efx loop.

One thing. Make sure the salesman doesn't on the power and standby together. Good way to blow a tube amp.

the ValBee is a full tube unit so it does give off a tube tone, no doubts about that. the sheer size of this amp is the very subject of scrutiny- the default driver doesn't manifest enough bass to put the tubes to good use IMO. however, that's the ValBee in stand-alone use, with pedals attached, it's another story as i've found out.

the amp begins to show its true potential with the volume at about the half-way mark, anything less, it sounds under-driven & rather excessively fuzzy. i've made my EQ/ Tubescreamer/ Micro Amp pedals as permanent supplements for the ValBee in use. with these attachments at the helm, the amp is capable of fulfilling many genres, metal included.

in any case, if you are an interested party, do try it out in person, however, the amp per se might sound lacking to many of us, myself included. its basic tonal performance is a very pleasant sounding platform to further your individual tones.

I am very noOb in this...

Although over the 10 years, I have always heard of Tube Amplifiers, usually from Guitar Amps, or high end HIFIs like Mcintosh, etc. Til today, I still don't know what's the diff.

Asked Uncle Google, but unable to really appreciate the difference.

1. What is the MAIN difference between a Tube Amp and Normal Amp, as in the sound?
2. And was the Tubescreamer invented/manufactured to complement this tube thingy on normal Amps?

TIA... Happy CNY... :)

1. On tubes, you get a very full sound and a very characteristic breakup you don't hear on solid state amps. There are also more 3rd level harmonics in tubes. There are many other subtle differences in terms of the tone shaping. You gotta try one, I did, and it sounds much different from a solid state. To me, it just makes my guitar come alive.

2. Yes, the tubescreamer was initially designed to saturate tubes. Thus the name. Though many people use it many different ways, the basic purpose is to add more saturation to the sound. If you compare it to a ds-1 on tubes, the tubescreamer is not as compressed, to me its a good thing :) .

i'm glad there's an amp like that coming on the market.. hopefully it will force the other big boys to come out with lower priced tube amps as well. I'm hoping the valbee sells well.

COol Guys,
Probably getting it if its good. Cuz i'm using a really budget amp with just eq gain and volume. haha.

Anyway anyone tried epiphone valve amps??? I read from the websites that they have 5 watts ones. Does sweelee carry them?

the tube vs solid-state preference is really a personal choice. although some people claim that nothing matches a tube warmth, today's technology has produced many solid-state units which rivals the tube in this philosophy. also, the tube type & overall circuitry makes/ breaks the amp's tone.

coming back to the ValBee- hope Ibanez is reading stuff about this amp & employ subsequent upgrades in time to come, namely a bigger driver (12" preferably)... 8)

it was dissed in the telecaster forum.. :?: :!:

so does this make it a bad amp?

I don't think its a bad amp. On its own, it defintely doesn't cover alot of ground. Changing the speakers might open more ground. However, I was very impressed that it has a full set of controls. Bass, Mid, Treble, Presence and gain. Not alot of amps in that price range can boast that.

investing in a replacement speaker for the ValBee is really a lesson in futility. for those of you who are about to do just that- please reconsider.
