hi there 8)

i've tried the Ibanez SM7 Smashbox, i recommend you list it down with other contenders like the Metal Zone (BOSS) & Jackhammer (Marshall) among others. it's a worthy pedal, no kidding...

the Smashbox has lots more drive than the BOSS DS-1. if you wish to use the smash box as a main distortion source, you are on the right track. the DS-1 on the other hand is a little too mild to function as a primary drive unit, the reason why Joe Satriani use it as a booster instead.

what the Smashbox lack is really a 'Mid' control in its EQ offering, it might sound a little too trebly at certain settings, thankfully the 'EDGE' function helps to polish things somewhat but it's not as dynamic as what a real Mid control would do. all in all, it's very much overlooked because too many players are shoved the Metal Zone in their faces & accepting this black box before they actually assess the options available in the market. please do not pay more than $100 for a used unit...

for 2004, Line6 offered the Uber Metal pedal which is one heck of a distortion unit, do add this one to your list too: http://www.soft.com.sg/new/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=17891#17891

thanks mikemann...

got mine from a friend for 60 bucks, a few scratches but that's all. works like a dream 8)

the drive is awesome i must say, put the edge on sharp and you can get an insane metal sound out of it. but still it feel a bit "harsh" and i can't seem to get the same sound out of it as my trustworthy ds-1 (or should i say what's left of it after the "accident"). since i'm not such a metal person, so subversion or anyone else suggest how to dial in the knobs to get a milder distortion? comments appreciated.

the other day i was at swee lee and they said ds-1 sold out and i was like 8O ... how much would a new ds-1 cost me now? got it last time at about 110 new.

Ds-1 still about that price...

can't get a milder distortion out of the smash box, really, even if you lessen the drive. my suggestion here would be to attach an EQ after the pedal itself to prevent a harsh midrange...
