ibanez knobs

the satin grey knobs on my ibanez recently has a little bit of tarnish on them, so i polished them. as a result, the first one turned to chrome, and i didn't proceed with the second one.

how do i remove tarnish or discolouration from such hardware without losing the original finish?

the edge pro bridge has a bit of that as well.

also, where can i find such replacement knobs in sg?

I think most knobs are universal and can be replaced on any guitar, since the pots are essentially the same in design, with the knob slotting into the nub protruding from the pot. You might not be able to find the exact same knob unless you order directly from Ibanez or an Ibanez dealer, but you can find knobs at most guitar shops e.g. Davis, Guitar Workshop, Ranking, Swee Lee etc

Either buy them overseas, www.universaljems.com

Or go to Davis.

Thing is, Ibanez has this awful finish, called Cosmo, which is what you have. It WILL rub off you cannot stop it. Okay, you can, if you don't play the guitar or don't touch the axe.

You MUST keep cleaning up after playing. The Cosmo is very thin and the chrome under that, I don't even know if its chrome, it rusts/bubbles very fast. So yeah... thats the nature of Cosmo finishes... just keep it clean now to postpone the bubbling.

thanks. i will try davis.

the annoying thing is, i've only really played it a few times and left it in its hard case. next thing i know, i see it having tarnish or bubbles like you say.

well u could consider replacing with other knobs. ShredCows is probably correct - the knobs don't last with usage.

it's not just the knobs... the tuners, the pickup rings and the bridge too..

just got my RG321 second hand, and it's tarnished like that too... cant even polish it away completely. but i'm pleased with my buy still, after all, it was a decent price.

hmm.. feel like changing the hardware soon. :D

I have 2 pieces in black. You want?

I've got the same prob, every single metal object on my RG321 has already tarnished, and I just bought it in November. Damn. =( Any way to get rid of the tarnish? =\

You can't get rid of the tarnish... unless you strip off the gun metal chrome layer, leaving the chrome layer behind.

Its not a biggie seriously, its cosmetic, but I know it will irk you lots. :) Try to bear with it until the unit starts to rust.

For the bridge, why would you want something like a vintage trem? :) You prob have to dig out some wood.

Perhaps you can look up the Schaller bridges in stewmac. Or look up a Gotoh catalouge for the Gotoh hardtail bridges.

Google. :) But do make sure the new bridge will fit.

Hmmm... would graptech saddles from Maestro fit? ;)

looks like the entire month of rain has taken its toll on our gutiar equipment.

 true enuf, when i picked up my guitar today i noticed mildew spots on the back of my leather guitar strap. never happened to me before 8O

Thats why...
Good chrome stuff wouldn't tarnish like that. :)

in order of hardiness,
Chrome
Black paint
Cosmo
Gold

For gold, it depends if its REAL gold or gold finish ala Ibanez.

xspace> those are 'speed knobs' yeah? those are nice, esp the black ones. but i somehow think they look more appropriate on gibsons (or its lookalikes) rather than any other kind of guitar

ibanez guitars should have more aggressive-looking knobs/hardware
but that's just me lah

 I actually do not know it's naming. I think it looks good on PRS, or those quilted (did i say it right?) tops like SZ 5/7 series

RGs should have aggressive looking knobs... :D Anyway your gear already bery goods... 8)

 no lah... my gear only so-so, esp compared to many of the other forum members here who own PRS, RG Prestige, MIA Fender RIs, and Gibsons 8O

i guess we can never be satisfied... that's G.A.S for you.. haha

but you're right, those speed knobs look good on those 'premium' guitars with quilted tops
