tried the above bass recently (ATK305) the feel is quite incredible, the overall construction's also impressive considering its indonesian make. (List: $1,100). looking for players here who own/ tried the previous incarnation...

I had a black 4-string with maple neck, Japanese made. Bought in 1998 used. Really regret selling it. It was a very nice bass that balanced well and had a unique tone. Not exactly a Stingray on a budget but a valid bass with a very versatile range of tones from its single (albeit triple-coil) pickup.

What I was referring to was how people sometimes categorise basses as "____ on a budget". The ATK-Stingray and RD-5502, just for example.

It's not a Stingray. It doesn't cost as much as a Stingray, neither is it built like one, but you can tell where its designers took cues from. Subversion, you obviously own a Stingray so we'll take your word on this. I wasn't intending to label any bass 'this or that', merely reiterating what some reviews have mentioned.

I owned the original made in Japan one. Still ATK 405, great workmanship. It was a 5 string with ash body and natural finish.

Tone is cool, but i had friends who said that they wld have rpeferred the bottom end tighter.

Huge sound but the Low B string is a lil loose for me. Neck was finished. nice feel.

But overall a great bass, i shld have held on to it.

Saw it in Swee Lee about 10 years back, I think. Wasn't too much of a fan then. But kind of find that it's getting more appealing recently. Looks solid. I think it's probably good for playing punk, for the looks firstly.

i've got the atk100. it weighs a ton compared to the new ones. yeah neck was satin finish jusst like the atk 305 at swee lee

i tried the ATK305 yesterday at swee lee ... =) ...

must say that the build was quite impressive albeit it being Indonesian-made. The overall feel was really nice and the triple-coil pickup was quite impressive too ... reminded me of a stingray ... really .. i don't play stingrays but the single pickup option was quite tempting ..

quite a huge pricetag though ..

funkychicken: no i don't own a stingray, i own the discontinued SUB bass which was swapped for a Fender Mustang last year...

i'm currently asking myself why i shouldn't buy the ATK- can't seem to find a reason not to :?

I've been looking at an ATK too, but more keen on the ATK700 in Natural. Just to clarify I didn't mean to knock MM's or Stingrays in any way, so I apologise if I came across that way. Bad day at work, must be.....

I don't think you ned to apologise on the SR , MM bit, it was quite clear what you were saying just a tad long. =)

I owned a MM Stingray, yes they arevery different right down to th efeel of the bass.

Being the noob that i am, i ever tried the ATK at boons musical in potong pasir and at that point of time i was like WA WA WEE WA!

One of the few basses that actually sound and feel different from the rest

funkychicken: no apologies necessary...

i'm adding a new bass to my collection, thought i had decided but the ATK is a 'different' consideration.

the one featured here is a 5string version, the ATK300 will cost slightly lesser... (in any case, it's list price).

sub,how many basses do you have?and is the sub a lot or a bit different from the stingray.i regretted not buying it from davis last time

i have only 1 bass left... (& many guitars surrounding it...). the SUB bass isn't a Stingray clone, the outline is similar, not the tone.

it's generically similar- pickup position, body outline, etc but the tone isn't quite a stingray. close but not quite...
