Been playing bass for about half a yr, using a fender jap jazz bass. Often play in church, they've got a gigantic yamaha bass amp, which sounds really great, but my bass doesn't seem to have that 'oomph' or punch. i've tried using the cs3 which i use 4 my electric but it doesnt help much. Any suggestions as to what gear 2 get? Thanks

Hey there, you might want to try tweaking your EQ higher up in the mids section to cut through more... i believe that'll give you more punch... play around the 1k region of the eq which belongs to the mids... but not too much!

Cheers!

i'm assuming punch like the sound of a good p bass.
if you don't want to look at a new bass try a simple series parallel mod on your bass. shouldn't cost more than 30 bucks and you get a more versatile bass.

Either select the bridge pickup(if possible) reduce lows, add more mids, Slower attack, quicker release on Compressor. Play with a pick towards the bridge.

You'll probably want to up your mids a little and back off some bass and low mids.

Too much of the latter two and you'll end up sounding like mud.

if you have a normal EQ controls ... just boost the lows and low mids ... boost the high mids a tad and the highs just leave it flat ... that's why i do to have a nice punch to my jazz .. =) ..

if it's a parametric EQ ... get the 125 - 400Hz range for the attack ...

Punch normally is more from the amp end. One person punch is another's gentle touch. If you are the latter, learn to curb your appetitte.

Bass Amps less than 60watts generally cannot cut it for rock or pop performance.

Bass Amps from 60 to 100watts, more likely be enough for small gigs.

Bass Amps from 150-300watts should be sufficent for most performances.

300watts and beyond, you make a guess lah.

Some tricks to boost your bass signal is to get a Boss bass EQ, which will throw a much higher signal to the amp preamp. Some bass amp preamps have very high headroom (input limit acceptance). BUT this practise is FROWNED upon, as you would be working the Power Amp circuit into clipping zone (excess). Which will decrease lifespan on robust amps, and blow amps and speakers on weaker ones. So do you want a weak amp or one that is blown? That is the question.

yah i think most of the time, punch can be adjusted from the amp or with a simple eq pedal.. maybe u should try playing around with the eq first.. with a big yamaha amp i'm sure u can adjust it to taste..
