hybrid picking?

so i'm trying to learn a song which requires hybrid picking...and well, when i pick the bass string, it drowns out the first string...in other words, i don't think i'm plucking the first string properly with my ring finger..

do you guys use your nails for plucking the first few strings? or do you guys use your skin? do you pluck upwards or downwards?

i normally pluck it with my nails in a upward motion. so it kinda helps to keep ur nails a lil bit long.

I pluck upwards with the tip of my finger where the calluses grow, kinda have to pluck it hard for it to beat the bass.

go see 1 one eric johnson video on youtube.he says that he uses his callouses
not his fingernails

Same.. i dont use fingernails.. and i tend to use my fingers to pluck upwards and my pick goes down.
