So, I bought a bass off SOFT a few days back. Model is a Yamaha ERB 300 II.
Looks good. I ain't a bassist, a guitarist actually. I just needed a bass for home use, to write and hopefully get some inspiration. First thing I did when I reached home: Plug it into my UX1. (Yupp, I ain't got a bass amp)
First reaction: OUCH. The hum was so loud and bad. But its okay, I went to tighten the pots and input jack. Made sure everything was tight. So, I plugged it in again. OUCH. The hum was still there. I tried playing stuffs but no bass sound, just the hum. Ouchie.
So... I plugged it into a tuner. The tuner showed G#. Ok, I have experienced this G# hum before with my guitar due to a bad solder joint. I opened up the control plate and checked the soldering. Everything LOOKS OK though. Hmmm. I'm suspecting a cold solder joint. Possible?
I texted the previous owner. Apparently this bass hasn't been played for a very long period of time. He suspects a 'ground' problem. He offered to send over this bass to his friend to have a free repair. Yeah, wonderful service I must say!
Now, I wanna ask, what are the possible causes of this hum? And, is there any way to DIY solve this problem? How much will it ROUGHLY cost to send this bass to a tech? Cause it would be rather troublesome for both him and me to send the bass over to his friend for repair. Thanks!
Cheers,
Eugene
