how to use guitar slide

hey peeps,wanna know how to use a guitar slide.Some say need to tune down? Another question is,do i just slide on the surface of the strings or must i press so that the string hits the frets?

im interested in learning slide too. but i know absolutely nothing about it. first off, which would you recommend, a glass one or a metal one? is there even a difference? i've read that many artists prefer using glass, something like a neck of a bottle.

So should i get a glass slide?

Or should i just break of the neck of a e-33 and use it as a slide?
