How to sing with a rock voice?

I dunno anything about singing... but I think rock vocals tone is rather analogous to the "drive" tone used in guitars. You have to switch from a clean tone to a driven tone. :)

Rock Vocals

You need to eat some rocks and stones to achieve a good 'rock voice' lah.

Kidding... Hee hee..

Besides the fundamental requisite of having an excellent voice projection, especially when you need to sing above the band when the sound engineering is but lacking sometimes -

1) I think singing regularly helps

2) Finding your own sound and knowing your capabilities definitely helps

My point 2 refers to you yourself know who you can sound easily like and who you have difficulty sounding like. This way you know your own abilities and stick to that style you can easily sing in. For example, some people have no problem emulating Eric Martin's type of 'wet' vocal drive but find it almost impossible doing James Hetfield's almost growling vocal drive.

This is important because I don't think you can call yourself a rock vocalist if you can't do basic 'vocal drives'. No offence but it's like hearing Victor Tang singing 'Here Without You' in LTD, you just don't feel the power when the song is supposed to be a rock ballad.

Of course, this is just my personal opinion and experience lah.

I would love to learn from all of you.

:D

In my previous bands, I used to cover Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Dio etc, but IMO, I've never mastered nor acquired the 'rock' voice.

It's quite sad, really. You have to be born with the natural huskiness or roughness to your voice. And it's doubly hard for females to acquire that rock voice.

Female vocals are naturally higher and sweeter, enabling us to sing soprano better. Just listen to Within Temptation's vocalist; she sounds awesome with falsetto, but when she uses her real voice to sing, projecting from the diaphragm, she becomes just another singer.

It all depends on your personal style, really. We don't have to all sound husky and rough. :)

Acquiring A Rock Voice

It doesn't really matter if you drink or smoke to obtain it,just that those two would destroy your voice.

Do it naturally,it's all in the mind.Imagine hitting the note before actually hitting it.

Here's some of the vocal tips that i learn:

1)Drink plenty of plain water, even before going to bed.

2)Try to jog as it increases your lung capacity.

3)Swim,seriously,it discharge irritating nose liquid.

4)Don't over-do-it.

5)Stop once there's bleeding.

Rock voice will come if you have the will-power.Everybody is born a singer, but not everybody can unleash it,if they don't believe in it.Remember that.

candie

not all females voice are naturally higher. as for me, my voice is low, therefore most of time i can handle guys' songs.

takes time to practice and take long time to acquire that rock voice.

and rock songs does not really nd to haf e rock voice. eg. evanescence. vox of evanescence haf a high and powerful voice.

You don't need to be born with it. Thom Yorke and Fran Healy are two singers who can switch rock voice on, but their normal voice is nothing like that.

Then there's plenty of other singers who have the power of a rock voice, but don't use that sound. Who wants to be another generic rock singer like Chris Daughtry anyway?

Rosewood

BLEEDING?!? yuck omg wtf! dont do it to that extent! if you're not careful..you might damage your voice box & then its GG forever man..

TS808 - Raspy with warm overtone

Turbo Rat - Massive rock harmonics, aggressive midtones

Keeley MT2 - Grindcore growl, insane screams

Remember to buy a mic insert cable for use with the above instant 'rock voice' solutions.

Well Rock voice .. what type of ROck voice you want actually.. Skid row type? Steelheart? Deep purple? Husky? if u want a husky voice yes actually alcohol, smoking will do it.. actually just damage your vocal cord ull sound like bryan adams or legendary Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. But if you want to sound like Sebatian Bach of Skid row, then u gotta learn "Headtone Technique" if you wanna sing like The STEELheart's vocalist then learn both headtone and Falsetto technique.. and you must have natural BIG voice but can go high pitch to sound like James Luprie or Rio james dio.. I'm a vocalist myself..

REALLY? SWIMMING CAN HELP? I have nose sensitive since young. If it really helps maybe I will try swimming like every week. :D

Its the technique, you must know the methods of warming up your voice before you sing, methods to project your voice, you want your voice to come out directly from your face? you want your voice to be sounded like sarround system? its all the technique, doesnt mean its Rock, you anyhow strain your voice and spoil you vocal cord, and there's a method to repair your voice after you sang like 8 rock songs? if you apply the right technique , you will feel tireness in your tummy and head, instead off your chest and throat.

Jogging?- good- for your lungs yes very true, but caution- you will have to retrain your voice once you started jogging becoz you will have wider lungs, and u must readjust your voice control, trust me, once you already have wider lungs, you will find its hard to control your voice while singing and reaching high pitch notes, becoz your lungs are much powerful now, its like you install a turbo into you car's engine, now you need better steering wheel adjustment, and you gotta get use to it by driving more often.Thats where proper singing techniques get invlolve here. Best to get a trainer to train you so that you wont spoil you vocal cord permanently, and if you go thru vocal train, you will find there's alot of things that you dont actually realise, how important it is for a singer to go thru vocal classes.

:), Chellenge- Two songs that i really wanted to sing without a prob last time were Shes' gone (by SteelHeart) and I remember you(by Skid row), and one song which i think need constant practice on its pitching and now i couldnt really sing it well due to lack of practice on proper techniques - I never let you go (by Steel Heart).

But you must avoid Clove cigarettes if you smoke...

clove cigges ...aka gudang garamm did it for me lah.... I smoke the rest before going for garams and still sounded like Dick Lee
