Hi,

I new to guitar softwares/channelling from a guitar directly to the computer. Because I've never done it before. Therefore, I've prepped a few qns regarding this.

1) When transferring the output of a guitar into a computer, what software(s) is/are required?
2) Would the software have the same output (quality) as an amp?
3) Do I need other jacks/cables other than the standard 6.3mm to connect to my computer?
4) And lastly, I would really appreciate if you could gauge the price so I can plan my budget :D

I've done video/audio editings before so..... I'm more concerned on the connection part..
Thanks!!!

If you absolutely don't care about quality / just want to record for fun, you can try going straight from 1/4" (your guitar cable) to 3.5mm (standard line in on your soundcard, same size as headphone jack).

If not, you'll want an audio interface with a 1/4" input. Common ones are USB interfaces by Line 6, M-Audio, Presonus, Tascam, Focusrite etc. The cheapest is probably a single input one like Line 6 UX1, slightly more than $100 secondhand.

Software-wise, you'll want some sort of amp simulator. Some of the audio interfaces will come bundled with software, or you can search for free plugins for your DAW.

Thanks for the answers.

Now, I'm interested in the audio interface and I have no idea which ones to look out for.

Would a budget of $200 get me anywhere to a decent one? I would really appreciate if you could recommend me some audio interfaces.

As for the software, I could get it online right? as long as it's suitable for the audio interface.

Thanks

Yes there are free softwares lying around.
I think $200 can get you a decent one.
As for recommendations.. zoom or line6 for that budget?

wait for carboxy to reply =D

Lol. Line 6 Pod Studio UX2 (or the older model TonePort UX2) usually goes for under $200 secondhand on the classifieds here. Do your own research though. Do you need 2 inputs (maybe for 2 instruments, or 1 instrument and 1 mic at the same time) or can you get by with a cheaper 1-input interface?

Line 6 stuff comes with its own Gearbox and POD Farm software which have various guitar and bass amps and effects.

For other amp sims, just Google for "free amp simulator vst".
