i'm also a chruch drummer and i started then..because i'm from a small church there's much less pressure as you're not exactly performing in front of strangers. it's a good opportunity to build confidence too. i also played for service for a couple of years before moving on the playing at gigs, which i didn't have trouble playing because i was kinda used to it. plus being behind a drumset has it's pluses as well..
just tell yourself that people usually pay for attention to the vocalist and lead guitarist than anyone else and you'll be fine...
also don't be afraid to make mistakes..i've only been playing for 4 years and i've made countless mistakes up on stage. the key is playing confidently. if you have confidence you'd naturally be able to cover up your mistakes very well instead of stumbling and getting thrown off..
oh one more thing...a good way to cover up your mistakes is to make it look as if it's other people's fault. haha.... just give other people the look. and smile...then apologize profusely backstage..
