How to go about starting E-guitar?

Hello fellow forumers.

I've been playing acoustic guitar for around a year (excluding times where I didnt take it very seriously)

I started guitar immediately on fingerstyle (a genre different from fingerpicking to some extend) . It's a kind of playing by guitarist like Masaaki Kishibe, Kotaro Oshio, Ulli Boegershausen etc.

Hence all the way on fingerpicking techniques, nail attacks, natural harmonics etc.

I wanted to do electric guitar, but I always end up giving up due to feeling awkward using the pick and not being able to play fast.

Is there any suggestions on how to go about learning?

There's always this stereotype saying that it's easier to go into electric guitar once you learn acoustic, but that's only if you're just strumming chords.

The techniques are all too different between electric and acoustic. I cant even hold a pick properly and do a simple tune T_T
(oh btw, I'm interested in LEAD guitar playing, not rhythm.)

Any suggestions? Thanks for your time

heard of mark knopfler? lindsey buckingham? awesome electric guitarists who don't use picks. who said electric guitarists must use picks? develop your own style, stick to your own preferences, go pick up an electric guitar and play it the way YOU play.

Yeah like what halen said, u can play electric guitar with fingers ;D Im also that kinda person that becomes retarded when using picks hahaha so yeah im sticking with my fingers ;D

Using pick have many advantages especially more so if you are keen on playing the lead guitar. Alternate picking, sweep picking, pinch harmonics, hybrid picking...these techniques will spice up your solos and lead playing, creating your own sound and style.

It takes time and practice, practice, practice. Ask yourself, how did you first started off fingerstyle acoustic? If I were to dive into fingerstyle playing now, I would be facing the same problems with my fingers you are facing now with holding the pick. Didn't commitment and practice got you this far in plying fingerstyle? Now, apply the same passion you have for fingerstyle into learning the e-guitar. I tend to hold the pick with my 1st finger and thumb, with the tip facing upwards towards me. I will be putting up a video to show you how to soon.

Don't forget Jeff Beck and Mayer :D

practice. practice, and more practice. then you will get the hang of using picks. but i dont know about others. but once your down with picks. its hard to go back to fingerstyle.

sweep picking is just a technical reference for playing arpeggiated notes, you can do so without a pick. virtuoso bassists like Billy Sheehan (who finger-pick his notes strictly) do this all the time.
