im a noob just started learning guitar afew days and know just abit of it...and wanting to get a guitar but i duno how to buy a good one...
what should i look out for?

These are my personal suggestion.

1. Get a solid top (seriously.. the sound is a lot better)
2. When u hear the sound, make sure it is bright and has sustain (this is subject-able to good sound but.. this is what i feel is needed for good classical guitar)
3. Make sure it is something that will make u wanna practice with it ^^

Hope this helps u.

What is your budget like?

Common things to look out for:

1. General overview, any cracks, dents, dings? Or anything unusual or out of place.

2. Try turning all the tuner heads, see if any of them are unnaturally hard to turn, or if any of them are loose.

3. See if the neck is unnaturally warped.

4. Check the frets for rust, sharp edges, etc.

5. Play the guitar, check for fret-buzz.

6. And well, you've to like how it sounds.

If you have a teacher, ask them to help you. They will know where to get a model that suits you and what price you should pay.

What brand or model is good for below $200...

Try to get 2nd hand yamaha. why? because for a newbie its hard to find a GOOD and CHEAP guitar below $200, because you dont know whats good. Yamaha QC is very high, so you'll be pretty safe. Just make sure the guitar isnt damage or anything.

If you are really on a budget there are acoustic guitars under $100 at davis.. there's a package for about $120 i think

C40. if possible get C101 and above, keep a look out on the forums. One turns up every few weeks or so. Those guitar that cost 100 and below are almost unplayable.

you would want to look out for material i.e. spruce top or cedar top. they have different tones. try the different guitar makes out to see whether you prefer a brighter or warmer tone.

At ur price range ur best bet, like i said earlier would be this forum. If u wanna have a look, there are shops that specialise in classical, like luther music located at bukit timah plaza and tomas music at roxy square. You can ask them to advice you.

in your case here, sound is not the most important factor as you gotta be realistic with that kinda budget that you have.

the more important things to look out for are:

the sustain and the action of the guitar.

the most important factor about a classical guitar is the sustain. there is really no point in getting a good sounding classical guitar and have close to 0 sustain. how to tell whether the sustain is long? just play a note on the 1st string 12th fret and notice how long it takes for the note to die off. the longer the better :D.

action of the guitar determines whether you'd carry on playing regularly or just chucking your guitar in the closet. a lot of newbies give up playing classical guitar cos they claim its very painful to play after a while cos the strings are too far away from the fretboard. 2 common ways of rectifying this problem is either to lower the saddle or just use a lighter gauge of strings.

if the neck is outta shape... thats going to be a bigger problem cos classical guitars do not have a truss rod for adjustment. it is recommended to get a more expensive guitar for reliability sake.
