How many fingering patterns do you need?

Hi,
In the minor pentatonic scale, there are 5 boxed patterns for each key. Ideally, I suppose it is good to be able to play them all. If you do not have a good memory, what's the minimum number of these boxed patterns you need to remember in order to be able to play rock/blues?

The absolute minimum is 1.

In 'A'

------------------------5-8
-------------------5--8
--------------5--7
---------5-7
-----5-7
-5-8----

Seriously memorizing the minor pentatonic isnt hard. All the 5 'boxes' link to one another. 1 links to 2 and 2 links to 3 and so on. I usually practice the scale with a backing track so it's more fun :D

well for good solos I suggest this listen to more rock/blues stuff, listen and listen and listen until u can improvise by yourself as in know what notes to play can just sing it out or whistle the tune, after which just play what u sing or whistle on the guitar just try to find the notes. for the patterns well if you know all the notes of the fretboard u don't need to rely on memorising those patterns, it just comes naturally. the main thing here is what to play and how to play not what pattern to use.

Minor pentatonic is a good thing to learn, it is not hard to remember all of them. I think linking up all of them are the harder thing to do as sometimes we just focus on one pattern. Anyway, there is also a blues scale too where you just add a few more notes into each pattern.
