Depending on what is your expected 'end result'. If your goal is only to play accompaniment (that is like chords and stuff while some other instrument or person is providing the melody), then it's actually quite simple if you have the right mindset.
Three of my new students have managed to play with both their hands on the first lesson. One is even sight reading now on her third lesson, playing with both hands and using the sustain pedal.
I think the thing that gets in the way is the way people perceive music. We get around this by promoting an unconventional approach that gets you playing by instinct as soon as possible.
