how do u tell they key of a song?

you might wanna try out messing some power or open chords or run some major minor scales then you get an idea of what key it is in. Usually i play around the bass notes to 'agar agar' what key is it and then the progression on whether it is minor or major.

no thanks taylorboy..

like tts sposed to help.

lmao..kidding..i still dun get it tho.i tink i nid sleep.

ps.i was jokin abt my first 2 lines.hahaha.

firstly, you must know what is key signature.

like C Major, D Major, E Major ....

C Major is the most basic.
The notes are C, D, E, F, G, A, B

Let's look at G Major
The notes are G, A, B, C, D, E, F#
See, the difference between C Major and G Major is the F# note.

If you play the song and find that there are not #(sharps) or b(flats), chances are that it is a C Major key.

If you pay the song and find that you have to play a F# instead of a F, chances are that it is a G Major key.

Do a search for key signature on the web to learn more about it.

* the above are rough rough mentioned. there are reason what the key might be otherwise

aiya, study more theory!!

ok la u look at the first and last note of the song. if it starts with A and ends with A, most likely is either A major or minor. well then again, u gotta listen for any shaprs or flats to determine the key. if its minor key, do rmb to look out for a "7th note" too. its tricky

james, i get wat u mean..jey signature, is the #s bs right?

tera told me tt long ago..but i juz didnt get wat he meant..i think i get it now..

but, to find the key signature, 1 must play the song by ear 1st right?

hey james, btw wat if the song is played in chords? e.g. pop songs like avril's version of knocking on heaven's door..

i do read up man..juz tt..hardly aniting goes in my head..cos..i got attention deficit disorder..i can juz sit down and read..

i'll get restless..lmao..

I learnt one way is to look at the chords. Then try doing simple solos in different keys of that chords ... Then see which one doesn't sound out of place, that's the key it's in .... Usually i heard that the first chord to be played is the key of the song ... But you know what? Get music lessons, that's the easiest.

eugene:wat's the 7th note?

my fren also said tt the last note is usually the root note, but tera said it doesnt always happen..

n btw for modren songs, the 1st note doesnt always happen to be the root note no?

train by ear, or if u are born with it, its called perfect pitch. When u are perfect pitched, u can tell wad notes the song is playing, therefore the key. Few people have this talent, but those that i noe are amazing. The other way is through the yamaha way, where u learn from young the sofage symbols...

In a major key, we have Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti
In a minor key, we have Do Re Me Fa So Le Te

The Ti and Te is the 7th note. The 7th note of C Major is B and of C Minor is Bb. The theories here: http://www.guitarlessonworld.com/lessons/index.htm
Lessons 13 to 17 shld clear up some doubts :)
