how do u consider a professional keyboardist

wat does it takes to be a professional keyboardist?

just knowledge of chords? the certs? nowadays certs aint good in proving how good a keyboardist is...

more and more 8 graders in piano failed their role in keyboarding.

beside a good vast chord knowledge and a good improvising feel and ear for sound effects what else is needed?

and also how to improve as a keyboardist?

this seems pretty tough question and a subjective one.

a grade 8 pianist doesn't mean a good keyboardist,
the ABRSM gives one a good music foundation and
the grade 8 means one can play the piano effortlessly.

but the ABRSM do not teach about pop/jazz rudiments,
like chordal knowledge and scales which is highly applicable in
pop music. That's why an electone/organ player can play in a pop
context better but normally an electone player not so accustomed on a hammer-action piano.

Besides, knowing to play well, a professional keyboardist must also
know MIDI/computer and sound design.

hahas in a way i don think grade 8 lack in pop/jazz style.

for example i m have a ABRSM grade 8 but my classical playing aint as good as my pop playing.. in fact pop seems to be easier for mi as i have basic feel for wat chords goes to next..

but yea grade 8 did help my foundation in pop espically arpeggios, this help make play chords easier. when i knew about keyboards i admit i didnt know that the keyboard style of playing is using chords, i played the pop songs blindly seeing the score. sight reading is never a problem..

that was until i saw performers perform, DRAM THEY PLAY CHORDS i never knew wat were chord i alwis thot the stuff on top of the piano score are just guitar tabs... took mi painstaking 6 months to get done wif reading chord. now i can read chord wif ease, my nxt step...

sound engineering and chord subsitution, improvising using different scales mode..

but i do admit its hard to self learn it yourself, and self learn tend to be dangerous it leads to bad habits... should get a pop class in keyboarding soon

for sound engineering its a secret skill most keyboardist would keep to themself.. i mean its hard to share your sound wif other keyboardist,... u depend on that for rice bowls.... hahas

I agree with Bongman - this is extremely subjective. In the end, the best judges will be the audience.

sound engr a secret skill? quite a strange comment?
nowadays I think a lot of people hardly edit the presets or create their own sounds. as long as the sound can fit shld be okay.

nowadys keyboardists don really tweak the sounds they use, most of them just use whats available and whats best.. speaking of sound design, its more for a sound efx engineer, or people who just want to create something more creative, maybe like ambience track etc. I agree that pro-keyboardist should know midi and some sound engineering stuff.. cost most likely if they release their own instrumental album they'll be on their own :lol: ..
