How do I record my friend's guitar with my laptop?

erm how about a mic with an XLR head, and a mac book?
how do i connect those? without an interface.
i heard i could use a XLR to 1/4 converter?

Like what cable do I need to connect his electic guitar to my laptop? Also, how much'll it cost? Thanks!

yup its gotta be a guitar interface or if you're using a mac, you can try griffin's line of guitar cable products. the cheapest one they have is about 70 bucks.

i'm pretty sure they have something like that for windows as well, but i'm not sure how much and where you can get it from.
but do note that you can't just buy one of those 1/4 inch converter that converts to 1/8 and plug it into you laptop. doesnt work. tried it

i'm not sure about mics, but you can't do that with a guitar that's for sure. but even if you could, wouldn't it be better if your guitar had a direct input? unless you're recording an acoustic guitar or some other instruments.

haha sorry, i forgot to state that im looking to record drums, and i kinda just hijacked this thread as it was slightly relevant in trying to connect an instrument to a laptop
