How do I properly clean my guitar ?

Hey guys, bought my first electric a week ago.

question now is, how do i properly clean it ?
I plan on using a carnauba wax with a micro-fiber cloth, that good enough ?
anyway, how do i wipe it ? like circular motion, or etc etc.

another question is, how do i preserve the fretboard ? how much lemon oil is needed, etc.

thanks !

Hey, the microfiber cloth alone should suffice for day to day cleaning - dont use the carnauba wax too often or it will result in a build up on the finish. It doesnt matter how you wipe it. As for lemon oil, do follow the instructions on the product. Usually you should apply it with a cloth, leave it on for a few minutes then wipe off the excess.

use fine steel wool and lemon oil for rosewood fingerboards ONLY. for maple, using lighter fluid should be enough. can use brasso but I dont like the idea of doing so.

for now polishing your guitar might be fun but in a long run, it will become a chore :/

using lighter fluid should be enough...:/

Dont try a 'hendrix' when you're at it. ;)

I just use a not-so-damp cloth for the body for daily cleaning. For the strings, neck & metal parts, Ive got an old rag I used that smells like a gas station. Its not been washed for ages but it works well.

Once a week, Lemon Pledge. Yeah I know you'll frown. But to each its own lah. :-D

A guitar tech from a well known SG store told me once that even though they dont recommended it, they're using Pledge to polish their own gtrs in the backroom!

haha just curious...Can you use like household stuff like erm... Dettol for like cleaning the fretboard, the back of the guitar, the body of the guitar? haha Dettol kill 99% germs!! lol..

your signature doesn't mention that it's free

my signature didn't mentioned it was free...thats because i never mentioned it was for free too...please do a check on ur eyes...read more...understand my sentence...then do a conclusion..thanks..for someone who just joined...u sure have alot of post..and from what i have read the past few months..they have not been very constructive for others...either being a price police..or picking problems with others...

peace guys :)

i use old english lemon oil whenever my fret board gets dry, but for day to day cleaning i use microfiber cloth to wipe down everytime i play my guitar.

perhaps someone should try dettol as mentioned and tell use the effect ;)

Think the most important parts for me that I usually clean are the fretboard(especially the fret wire), and the bridge. I don't really take that good care of my guitar in terms of cleaning the body to make it shine every other minute, I prefer my guitars to have that 'played' look.

aiya..eeasy la.u all use so exp stuff.u knw when u shiet, use that same toilet paper.recycle-save enviroment and re use it..to wipe.it wont hav gas smell bt ur smell:mrgreen:

ok before you grab that canuba wax...wait.

is your guitar finished natural...no paint? bare wood?

if its a coloured body , use AUTOGLYM, squirt a little on chamois cloth and buff to shine...

for natural finish, wax once a month. clean with a dry cloth after you play.

for the fretboard, lemon oil is ok...again once a month and clean with a dry cloth after
playing.

if you still cannot, i can clean you guitar for $30, includes pick up & drop off.

comes to the lower end.use ear wax and cooking oil  hehe.

least dust and least work u hav to do is keeping ur guitar at HER own home.soft/hard case.b4 and after playing apply lemon oil and wipe ur guitar.letssay for my case i using Fast-Fret and i dont knw the chem for cleaning.use specticle cloth those smooth and doesnt leave dust when u wipe :p

klol i tried dettol! lol On the wood and paint parts. I feels really clean, and oil free. =) As you know sometimes u reach home and start playing the guitar with dirty fingers and oily skin...
But just make sure dun use dettol on the metal part as my mum says dettol cannot wipe metal so i dun dare try...haha
yea so dettol rocks

I use Autoglym super resin polish for the guitar body, Jim Dunlop lemon oil for the fretboard and Brasso for the frets. Works really well for me.

nice sugestion guys.. well for me i also used pledge(many go against it) but it works like a charm for me... comes in lemon or orange...

Use furtiniture polish for the neck will be sufficient acutally. i always use it and my mother gets cross cause i always kope hers! haha

for the strings i suggest using FastFret. quite useful. use a bit of olive oil to coat the metal parts of the guitar. works like a charm
