1. Have you ever wonder, how long will you be playing ONLY in a jamming studio?

2. How long are you gonna perform in gigs without any recognition ( due to a genre with no scene )

3. What will you do, after a number of sales at your ep launch then later be forgotten or recorded a few demos and gives out to lots of people?

4. After playing such big venues, recognition can be obtain, will that bring you to a record label? what about those playing in small gigs?

5. Do Local record company goes around sniffing for good bands? or do they just wait till they appear in the media?

6. Even though after performing for so many shows, can bands go further?

7. Most good bands are signed internationally, but locally?

8. Putting videos and demos/EP on the net can be a benefit, but how much percentage can your band be found?

This are the true and main factors about nowadays band, share your opinions what can be done better to improve.

This might benefit your band as well.

1. Have you ever wonder, how long will you be playing ONLY in a jamming studio?

if the band has no long term plan or desire to play out gigs then they will be happy playing in a studio.

2. How long are you gonna perform in gigs without any recognition ( due to a genre with no scene ).

there IS a scene. we have ignored it all this time. this scene was developed by the local bands of the sixties throughthe seventies, eighties and i exploded in the nineties...the oddfellows, shades, fish on friday, kevin mathews...and largely thankful for bigO magazine and chris ho. the scene is still around but there is no good torch bearer to fly it high as they did, today.
live music is almost dead...and the bands today are not really good because music today is not challenging to play ....

3. What will you do, after a number of sales at your ep launch then later be forgotten or recorded a few demos and gives out to lots of people?

again, ground work is important , yes you release an ep then you have to do in store performance (free as it is promotion), get it to pirate radio or an station that plays local music. get a sponsor for your shows, and possibly bundle your cd with the sponsors product eg coca cola....and follow up with the album proper.

4. After playing such big venues, recognition can be obtain, will that bring you to a record label? what about those playing in small gigs?

in singapore record labels are not out to sign you. before, there was pony canyon but now there is nada. you have to release it independently and if the record company sees potential in your release , they will offer to distribute it for you. promo budget if you are lucky if not find a sponsor and DIY.

5. Do Local record company goes around sniffing for good bands? or do they just wait till they appear in the media?

no and no....they have enough international acts to sell..and they sell better than local acts.

6. Even though after performing for so many shows, can bands go further?

yes. you continue...soldier on....net work... just like randolf and his looping soundscapes...he has achieved what robert fripp could not do in singapore, he has sold lots of his work and is a current mainstay at the esplanade and i am sure its due to his networking ability ( or some esplanade programmer is giving him free BJs or he is humping the behind of one of the programmers for the gig...just check out the recent performance..'looping the blues' ....what a load of ****).

7. Most good bands are signed internationally, but locally?

they are only distribution deals...

8. Putting videos and demos/EP on the net can be a benefit, but how much percentage can your band be found?

actually depends on how good the band sounds, looks.....to go viral something outrageous has to be performed.

you might want to edit the above statement as you english makes no sense or are you directly translating from chinese, malay, indian, tagalog, burmese....

This might benefit your band as well.

there is always a way out....

The last part about editing the above statement, im srry for the "bad english" but they way you said it, thats rude man..

Point number 2. There is a scene, but we ignore it. No good torch bearer to fly it high. - why?

Point number 3. What you said is true, but there is no guarantee, "get it to pirate radio or an station that plays local music. get a sponsor for your shows, and possibly bundle your cd with the sponsors product eg coca cola....and follow up with the album proper." It easier typing than getting sponsors..

Point number 4. "in singapore record labels are not out to sign you. before, there was pony canyon but now there is nada. you have to release it independently and if the record company sees potential in your release , they will offer to distribute it for you. promo budget if you are lucky if not find a sponsor and DIY." - Then how can "local scene or local bands" rise?

Point number 5. "no and no....they have enough international acts to sell..and they sell better than local acts." You sure? have you ever listen to good local bands? or is that just an excuse?

Point 6. Not necessary to tell me that man..

Point 7. You sure? so is a band like worm rot sign to a label just to be distribute?

Point 8. There are so many good local bands uploaded their demos, but its sad to see them not being recognize that much.

oh boo hoo ...poor thing....

Point number 2. There is a scene, but we ignore it. No good torch bearer to fly it high. - why?

why? ok my english maybe to 'cheem' for you to understand...what i was saying is there is NO scene now..those guys have all grown up and moved on..there is no one or bands around to generate that scene as vibtant as it was in the 90s.

Point number 3. What you said is true, but there is no guarantee, "get it to pirate radio or an station that plays local music. get a sponsor for your shows, and possibly bundle your cd with the sponsors product eg coca cola....and follow up with the album proper." well, bands should get out of their sheltered environment......seek ...and ye shalt find..ask.... thou be given...
sponsors can be anyone...hi fi equipt, soft drink company, snacks....etc..

Point number 4. "in singapore record labels are not out to sign you. before, there was pony canyon but now there is nada. you have to release it independently and if the record company sees potential in your release , they will offer to distribute it for you. promo budget if you are lucky if not find a sponsor and DIY." - Then how can "local scene or local bands" rise?

record companies are money making companies...most A & R are done by the head office like for example, asia - pacific the head office might be australia, japan or hong kong...and they already have their hands full with their local acts.
blame it on your fellow singaporeans for not supporting local talent...dick lee had to sell his work in japan then it was exported back to singapore..stephanie sun had to break through in taiwan then in singapore....

Point number 5. "no and no....they have enough international acts to sell..and they sell better than local acts." You sure? have you ever listen to good local bands? or is that just an excuse?

i am sure as i was from sales , marketing and A & R for BMG music and polygram in the 90s and its no excuse.

Point 6. Not necessary to tell me that man..

so dont read....

Point 7. You sure? so is a band like worm rot sign to a label just to be distribute?

worm rot is independent and distributed via independent network , you understand?

Point 8. There are so many good local bands uploaded their demos, but its sad to see them not being recognize that much.

well its because the 'demos' are substandard, badly recorded, the song had no 'hook's no good chorus...it just sounds unlistenable, just noise and directionless attitude.

in the 90s 'stomping ground' had the sound and the attitude and they i believe still have a following....if they played a show i will go and watch them...

honestly Evodia...if you are a musician or at the very least a budding musician....stop thinking and start doing...take that first step ...start 'wood shedding' - means practise and start playing out and meeting other musicians...

Also remember what aquanaut said. Hooks and chorus. That means "practicing" doesn't only mean practicing your instrument. It means practicing to be a better songwriter. If your writing is lousy and you practice a lot, it only means you know how to play a shit song very well - which is not very useful either.

I think getting exposure is not that difficult. If most of the target audience your music is 12-35 years old, they are most likely online.

The problem is, what do you got to show when these people turn up?

The following would be a good start

Take part in competition
Make video and upload to Youtube
Play gigs
Write originals, produce CD
Facebook, Twitter ...
Business networking
Create profile at www.music412.com

Piece of advice.. get your songs worked out.. and then get them recorded.. 1st step..
then shove them around for people to hear..
What happens next.. you have to cross your fingers.. you cannot force people to accept your music.. you only can share your stuff to others..
