Help! Slight distortions and volume problem with bass setup

Hi Guys,

Am a noob at bass guitar and gear, any advice given would be greatly appreciated!

recently, i discovered that while practising on my yamaha bb615, the sound kinda cuts off a bit, sometimes with some weird electric buzzing. it only happens once in a while during my practising but it kinda drives me nuts. this happened even tho i was using a makeshift PC speaker for practice while my bass amp was sent for repair.

yesterday, while practising my volume suddenly dropped very low even tho I didn't turn any of the knobs (was using my peavey amp since i got it back).

Any advice from the pros here as to what is going and how i could troubleshoot to isolate the problem? could it be the bb615's pickup that's causing issues? or the cable? and ever since i got back my peavey i felt that the volume was softer... not sure if it's just me tho.

Thank you all for your time!

loose connection at the amp jack, bass jack, or faulty cable, try using different cable, tighten your bass jack if problem still arise than it maybe the amp jack is loose or your amp speaker is faulty

Hi! Thanks for the reply.

I just tested the bass jack of my bb615. it does seem alittle wobbly. but i have no idea how to tighten it cos the nut is on the inside and it's very close to the EQ electronics. :(

I had a problem once just like yours. Try changing the input jack of the bass.
I couldnt agree more, tighten the jack of your equipment. Sometimes the minor cause of this is the problem.

hi all!

thanks for all the kind replies! i was kinda busy with my classical bass stuff so i didn't really meddle with the bb615 for a while.

i've tightened the input jack of the amp and it did seem a little better. also used a sandpaper to clean the interior. will also try the suggestions given by you guys.

hi will, i can't use the socket as show in the video because the nut is facing inward, the outside is kinda a jagged round jack.

Some connectors are a tad smaller in diameter and are prone to have poor contact. Try a cable with good connectors...like neutrik for eg. I use to have this problem until I change my cable to planet waves cable. Hope tt helps.

hi all! thanks for all the replies...

sorry i wasn't able to reply sooner, still busy with the classical bass stuff... and its neverending :(
(which is good i think, somehow)

the only tightening i did was the input jack of the bass amp.. so far okay... no noises already...

but which luthier would you guys recommend i bring it to? somehow there's also a problem with the high EQ knob which has been bothering me for a while, as i turn it up there's weird scratching noises like when u tried tuning the old style radio. would like to get it fixed and perhaps do a proper set up hopefully

Hi, you can buy a can of contact cleaner from guitar shops and spray into the pots. The cleaner usually comes with a long straw so u can direct the spray into pots. keep rotating the knob after spraying into pot to clean the contacts.

U can bring it to almost any Guitar shops to do this. But sometimes, if the pot is too bad to rectify, may need to change it out.
