Help in getting a good guitar

Hi there,

Gary here and I'm starting to try to pick up guitar more seriously. Previously I have taken some lessons here and there but never really persist, but recently took some more intense lessons and wish to go on from here.

Currently I have a really cheap guitar, which I think is not really up to scratch. Thus I'm thinking of getting a new guitar.

Can someone recommend me something that's good enough (nice tones acoustically and also when connect to an amp/speaker or something)?

Am thinking of a budget of close to $500, but not sure if it's good enough?

Please advise!

Ok mayb I did not state it clearly enough. More of looking at Acoustic rather than Electric guitars. But to have the option to plug in for potential gigs is an added plus at least...

Try going to Swee Lee, Davis, SVguitar, etc. Tell them your budget and test out those within your budget and what you want. Get the one you like most, as it will help motivate you to learn :)

From my first guitar hunt a month back, i learnt that regardless of brand or price, the best guitar is the one you are most comfortable with. However, if you are thinking of resale value, then go for those porpular ones.

For your 1st guitar and budget, I strongly suggest getting a 2nd hand one on the forum. You get a much better deal with your budget and upgrading will prove to be more economical if you pursue your craft.

While we are naturally drawn to aesthetics, it is more important to look for something that plays and sounds well. A friend who is experienced in such matters would help most in making sure the guitar plays/functions well whether it's a new or 2nd hand pc!

Hmmm, currently I saw and tried one guitar I tot I quite like it, but it would be above my current budget of $500, from Maestro. Solid wood though, but i really liked the grip of the guitar. Me has small hands and realized Maestro has guitars with relatively small grip making it easier to do bare chords. but really not sure if this would be a good investment...

Aesthetics not that impt to me, just wanted something i really like in terms of sound and great to play with. I wouldn't mind a second hand pc, bt how do i try them then?

you can always sms the seller in advance and ask if they mind tryout first (i don't think majority will say no) and make the trip to where they are?

Citymusic sells a bunch of plug in acoustic by this brand Custom which would fit your price range. I own one and other than the fact that the factory set up wasn't fantastic (had to get it properly set-up at a shop), it looks and sounds really decent for a $200+ guitar (non-plugin).

Can consider Takamines at davis which does fits your budget for the mid range takamines they have. like some says, go there tell them your budget and give it a try.
