Hi,

anyone here knows how to play percussive and strumming/picking together simultaneously? the x isn't muted, but it's sort of like a thumb slap or some percussive effect. i can't figure it out

something like this:

---
-3-
-0-
-x-
-x-

a video which does this:

help is greatly appreciated. if there's a video explaining it, it would be even better!

Fret the note as so, it looks like based on a tab the D note on the B string. Leave the G string open and untouched, and use any finger that is free on your fretting hand to mute the A and D strings. Just let them touch the strings but not press down on it, so when you play the string you will just get a percussive thuck thuck sound.

Now do that, and play as per usual, just hit the strings with a downstroke. Now do it in time, tapping your foot, to a rhythm. All as downstrokes first till you get comfortable doing it without worrying where your stray fingers have to be to be muting.

You could also do it with fingers rather then a pick. Like Raul Midon or Jason Mraz. Just strum down with your fingers or just claw pick the strings. The important part is the muting that is your fretting hands at work.

Fun? Go hear some B.B King, Clapton or S.R.V for more of this percussive, highlighting the fretted note technique.

hmmm nope.

i know about the muted notes and strumming.

but then there is another way. the percussive is much more louder and doesn't sound like a muted note.

i can't figure out how to do it though, been looking for tutorials. can't find any.

here's another example of the technique where the notes and the percussive is sounded together (not muted and then strummed)

if anyone can point me to a tutorial i would be grateful!

This requires both right-hand and left-hand technique.

Your left hand needs to mute the strings marked x while pressing down on whichever note you need to ring. I'm guessing you learn electric guitar chords before. Remember this?

E x
B x
G 5
D 5
A 3
E x

Your right hand has to play the percussive part, which sadly am not good at explaining. Can someone else help!?!? Trust your feel and watch DAVE MATTHEWS perform acoustic.

maybe a song to show this is Heart of life by John Mayer...

yeah that's what i'm talking about. it's shown more clearly on that video.

it's something like slapping the thumb on the bass strings and strumming the notes with the back of the nails using the middle and ring finger.

then again i'm not sure how it's done and whether it requires any left hand techniques.

help needed here

Its called the get-the-chicks-to-notice technique.

you could mute the E even A string with your left hand, but its more your thumb hitting the string then stopping so the string don't ring out. But do play the bass note and let it seep in abit to make your performance for panties more full.

Its all about the rhythm and groove. You have to get your right hand fingers to match the melody and harmony of the bass yet keeping it all in a groove with your picking and sexy mutedness.

While not exactly the same thing your looking for, do check out how its done at a higher level.
