Hmm.

My suggestion: save up, like give yourself a $300 range and get yourself a nice 2nd hand cort or yamaha or Maestro.

Always remember to bring someone experienced to try out the guitar.. you can only trust the salesperson's opinion to a certain degree.

Hmm... A very good suggestion.

And eh, about the classic or steel. What kind of music would you play with steel anyways? I am not really sure. Something about the 80s is what I heard. And what's sound difference?

Hmm.

Classical guitars are played in several styles, such as latin acoustic styles, rumba, and of course classical guitar music. Classical guitars use nylon strings.

Steel-strung acoustic guitars have been used from blues to country to folk to modern and vintage pop.

However since the advent of MTV, many people have blurred the lines between what guitar is used for which genre because you can get teenagers playing metallica songs on classical guitars in their school classrooms.

I personally play the acoustic guitar in the above (steel string guitar) styles.

From a sound point of view, steel strings sound much sharper and a little clearer compared to the mellower and 'rounder' sound of nylon strings. They also have better sustain and depending on the brand and gauge of steel strings, they are much more expressive and vibrato is much more easily produced on steel strings.

One thing to note is that although classical guitars have 'softer' strings the playing action (distance between string and fretboard) is pretty high, and hence a possible playing hindrance.

Steel strings may be harder for a beginner to adapt to due to the thinner strings and they tend to cut into people whose fingers might be a little more tender.

However that said, when set up correctly, any guitar would sound and play pretty soundly.

Nice, a very detailed answer.
Now I understand their difference... One moer question though. Can you use the classic guitar's strings for steel guitar and still play?

Hmm.

Classicla strings for steel-string guitar? Not advised because:

1. classical strings take longer windings due to the fact that nylong strings take a longer time to settle down. Classical guitars have that 'barrel' shaped tuning post so that you can have longer windings wihtout running out of tuning post space.

2. steel strings are of a range of thicknesses, from thin to thick; whereas classical strings are of a relatively even string gauge. So if you want to implement classical strings onto a steel guitar it would mean that you would have to re-cut or replace your guitar's nut to accomodate the change in string size.

3. Nylong strings have a bigger amplitude of vibration (meaning how wide the string would vibrate from side to side when plucked or strummed), which is part of the reason why the action is so high. The 2nd reason is for the picking hand to be more comfortable, away from the soundboard. Steel strings have a comparatively smaller amplitude of vibration.

4. Anybody who knows about guitars would laugh at anybody who does that due to the above reasons.

Hope this helps.

i prefer playing melody lines on a classical than an acoustic.. although i use acoustic for strummy stuff..

Okay, so bad idea to stick a classical guitar strings to a steel guitar. Vise versa. Well, if I want to sing while I play guitar, would classical be better?

Hmm.

Just like Dhalif I use a classicla more for lead than for rhythm, whereas I use my steel-string acoustic for both leads and rhythm.

Note: I play guitar and sing and play harmonica at the same time.

It's all about practise and patience and of course a budget for strings and harmonicas. Not forgetting capoes.

definitely the c50 but i believe c-50 is a classical guitar

what the man said, and yes definitely a C-50,i got a Kapok and a C-50 before, and yes the C-50 is way better.

Kapok is a hit or miss,if u're lucky u get a guitar that is good and has low action,if u're not, then u'll be suffering bruised finger tips in just 6 hours of play.

Thank you all. I have finally said "NO" to the seller. Thanks all for the help. I could not have made the right choice without you. :)

Classical...if I'm not wrong...acoustics have headstocks like electrics and classicals have those open things...

And the fretboard on classicals are really limited...at least on the ones I've tried...it stops at the 12th fret...that's it...absolutely horrid...not to mention the huge fretboard...

Maybe if you play for 2-3 months, the guitar will kapok itself...

hey u're right tt the kapok is a classical guitar with steel strings..

n y didnt u mention about the flat fretboard on classical guitars?tt wud suck real bad if fitted with steel strings(juz like the kapok)..
but i read somewher tt clapton likes flat fretboards..i dunno, but my personal experience with flat-fretboard acoustics(i've got 2 of them, 1 being my v 1st guitar, the other being the only 1 in my budget wen i was buying 1 in indonesia) hav made me loathe them to a real great extent..

Yamaha C-50 - I saw someone selling... But I am not sure because some reviews said the quality of sound is not great... I don't really have much detail of it yet.

$35 Kapok - There is this guy who said that he will sell his Kapok steel guitar for $35(+string and a cheap bag). I am not sure if I should buy it.. I mean, $35 is a great bargin, but is the guitar worth it? Here are some problems I am worried about :
1) Kapok is not very well know brand, so maybe it's not a good guitar
2)This guitar has 2 scrathes on it's neck... Would that effect the sound of the guitar?
3)Seller said it's "old and dusty", the neck of guitar is not long, and it doesn't have 'cut aways'...

As a beginner, I have no idea. Which should I buy? The Yamaha or Kapok? Please help me out by poll and/or reply. Thanks.

P.S: Poll is about KAPOK guitar
Here are pics of the KAPOK I am thinking about buying:

so..found aniting yet?

Hmm.

FYI my first acoustic guitar was a steel-strung guitar with a flat fingerboard. It was found by my granduncle at the void deck of some HDB block and it lasted me about 2 years before I accidentally knocked it over and the neck split at the heel.

I soon bought my TGM after that, but I soon fixed my old acoustic with a method that people would cringe at. I wonder if I should post pictures of it....

crawldaddy..lemme guess..did u tape the neck to the body??

hoho..its getting interesting.
