I was just wondering.....If im in a band and a gig organiser approaches me to play in his gig, do i pay to play in his gig or do i get paid??I heard that some bands have to pay and i was like O_O?

WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!?! I thought musicians got paid at least hey we make the music.....So the gig organisers swallow all the money?!?!?!

My band once paid 50 bucks to play. but it was just to organize the gig. The organizer gave us back the money after the gig. So i guess we didn't pay anything.

GUYS.........This gets really weird.....What about the ticket sales?None of them got to the bands???Absolutely none??

some organiser quite bastard, they just take the money for themself and never share the profit to all the participating band, from what i think, they should divide all the profits equally,if organiser wanna take the bigger percentage of the profit, still ok to me,but at least give some of the bucks back to the performing bands la =) just my 2 cents

why don't we be the ones who set up a 'company'?

right, so after all that witty money crap, let us just set up our very own profit-share based company. it'd be fair and more bands would wanna come help us with gigs. isn't that so? :D haha...as sofyan said, sometimes they had to pay because the tix sold were enough to cover up for the expenses spent on the gig organised.

in the case where the tix can't be sold enough to pay off everything, the bands don't have refunds. i have the intention to set up a 'company' or event management co. which is profit-share based. it is quite ridiculous though to hear things like even the established bands have to pay...

Re: why don't we be the ones who set up a 'company'?

thats quite a good idea =) and my band can participate as well, muahahas    but seriously,i went to 1 gig in planet paradigm last december [not mentioning the name]...the organiser just take the money and never give to performing bands, quite crap sia, still must pay $30 to perform summore -_-" feel like choking them, hahaha

Like what Malmsteen says(not exact):

While you're doing that, make sure you're having fun, and show that you really like doing it!

Don't do it just to get famous. There's nothing wrong with getting famous, but you gotta enjoy what you're doing while you're getting famous.

Hi all,

As an event organiser and a guy who plays in a band, I belong to both sides of the fence. I know how you guys feel. You don't wanna feel conned outta your money. Pay to play, hopefully, should be a thing of the past. In sofyan's case, pooling money to organise a gig and sharing the cost is still fine. If it's ticketed, the band shd at least get their original investment back. If there are profits, that will be great.

Some gig organisers are taking the risk to fork out their own money to organise gigs. The bands do not pay to play and under most circumstances, are not paid as well. To me, that's still pretty okay. It's pretty expensive to organise a gig in Singapore from scratch. The cost is ard $700 and above. I heard you can get equipment for much lesser but if there are no monitors, you are pretty much screwed for huge outdoor venues. The organiser needs to cover his costs as well.

That's my take on things lah... :D

In Chinese saying it goes: "You see me good, I see you good"

In English saying: "The grass always looks greener on the other side"

To PNG, I guess you are quite new to the scene.

In order to organise a gig, there are the gig management people, equipment supply, venue supply and misc stuff like security supply...etc. These need to be settled as well, in cash or in kind.

If you are just looking at the band, you are just like the customer eating a hamburger. How did you think the hamburger end up in your hands, a burger garden?? That is just the end-product.

Look at the BIG picture, if everything is so easy, all of us will be millionaires.

I don't deny some organiser do exploit the situation to 'make' money by giving empty promise. If you find such people, then boycott them by all means. Anyway I don't think they can make much anyway, judging the scene in singapore.

This topic keeps coming up, it's getting pretty much a drag topic already.

whoever wants to organise gigs tell me ok, i will help you take pix.
