recently did a setup for my acoustic guitar plus bone nut n saddle change...

agreed on the price. when collection time, was ask to pay extra $15 cos need to change new string but then the string he used was my own pack. so $15 for re-stringing service (damn i can do it myself if i knew)

anyways i just paid lor cos don't wanna bargain this small money... just wondering is it normal to be chargd extra for re-stringing service if u r already paying for a full set-up...

just wanna know if the shop trying to smoke me then next time not going back liao...

I think not quite right, its like hiding a fix cost, now that you know, next time you can mention that you do not want them to restring :)

yah although been playing guitar for some years i'm very new to all this techincal stuff...

so don't really know the normal practice... nexxt time i'll definitely check for any hidden cost involved... but it's quite silly if i do set up n the charge doesn't include restringing right unless set up don't need to unstring lah
but seems like i've be "robert-ed" haha... so prob won't be going to the same shop again...

@Tunge,
it's ridiculous.
if $15 for their strings + service, oh well, not too bad (but still...)

but charging you $15 extra for restring during setup without discussing in the first place = UNETHICAL. Tell us the shop/craftsman's name, we'll avoid it. :)

first advise: speak to the shop privately to try to settle it amicably first. unless that did not work out, then try ranting here.

but lately, quite a no. of ranting threads already isn't it?
the longest latest ranting thread, eventually was settled because the "victim" and the shop owner discussed privately.
eventually it would have to go that way. so why not start that way first?

actually for setting up a guitar, stringing it up with new strings is a must when doing things like intonation. for some things, old strings is just not the way to go.

$15 for restringing........ it is true that you could have done it yourself but time = money. restringing takes at least 30 mins right? the price you pay for convenience in this case.

If you do it yourself yea at least 30 mins, but professionals, they can do it in less than 10 mins(including tuning).Mike from SV did that for me proven ;]

ps:i think he only charge like 5 bucks for service?he did a guitar setup on my electric.(the setup was free though :D)

it's perhaps just a small misunderstanding between you and the shop, perhaps they included the price of the string and forgot that the string actually belongs to you, or perhaps it's actually a stipulated rate for changing strings, or too many perhaps...

i think i know which shop you are mentioning btw, considering your previous posts on other threads on where you went for set-up. i believe that the shop is honourable, perhaps really there's some misunderstanding.

so perhaps i will still advise you to clarify with the shop first. hope something good comes out of it.

actually just to clarify... i'm not ranting or complaining abt the shop, otherwise i'd have posted the name of the shop outright, i just wanna to know what the norm practice was.

i'm not blaming the shop or the luthier, i still believe they r sincere people, maybe if i was to bargain they might waive the fees but i didn't cos i'm newbie so don't know the "rules" lah.

anyways i believe changing string is a basic skill for any guitarist lah, never believe in having to pay for string changing, u really need 30mins to change string meh? i think normally less than 20mins leh. so that's why abit annoyed that i had to pay extra for it, but also pay already so i guess moving on

i'll certainly need more upgrades for my guitar (machine head n frets also wearing down) n prob will explore other shops n hopefully i find one that i can click with...

all said overall I'm satisfied with the service for this particular shop lah
