Guitar Progression exercises

Hey guise, I just got my first electric guitar a few days ago and I was wondering which way would be better in building up my skills:

Taking time to learn all the scales, pick an album of my favourite band and learn all their songs, or is it another way altogether?

I've had some experience playing acoustic guitar; it's just the picking pattern and reading tabs that I really suck at, haha. My friend taught me a set of A minor pentatonic scales, but it's proving, well, challenging hahaha.

everything is a challenge when u start on something new. learning the guitar is no different. if u think pentatonic is challenging and too much to handle then u'll cry when u dwell further. so my advise? just learn the pentatonic like ur friend taught u. i started with that scale too. its pretty universal, still using it today.

Yea, the good old pentatonic is great and probably every guitarist big or small uses it in one form or another.

The Am pentatonic is pretty straightforward, so might be a good idea to keep playing around with that. And once you've learned that, you can obviously play the same anywhere on the fretboard, in any key. Take note that you're able to play some form of melody / leed / licks on the Am pentatonic scale for almost any song that's in the key of C major or Am (maybe some others too, but im not absolutely sure).

Likewise, if the song is in the key of G, you can play leeds on it using the Em pentatonic. So for any major, you can do solos using it's relative minor; if you're not sure what that means, say so and you'll have a 100 people who'd be happy to explain it :).

So go pick up your favourite album, and play random stuff WITH it or over it once you've figured out the key and which pentatonic scale you can use. Great way to play / practice scales, and more fun than just playing the same scale up and down without accompaniment.

Good luck!
