Its quite hard for us to tell u what to get if u dont say what genre u play or what kind of pedal u want.
I would say save up more and get a multi efx like a zoom g2. it shd cost no more than 100 2nd hand.
If you dont want a mutli efx or if your budget is reallllyyyyyyy fixed u can get danelectro fab series pedals, shd cost below 50. maybe u can start with a distortion/overdrive pedal.

if you're new to sounds, you may wanna try a multi-effx pedal. you can experiment know at least how many pedals will sound like in general.
nonetheless, if you're just looking to buy single stomp boxes (that's what they call it). there's the famous Beta-Alvin that cost about $50 at Davis or SV.

With that kinda budget you wouldn't be getting much for single effects pedals.
Like 'wck' mentioned, it'd be a good idea to look for a zoom g1 or zoom g2 multi-effects unit since you said you're a beginner, so that you'd be able to be familiar with the many different effects or the many 'flavours' of overdrives and distortions.
Otherwise, you could look for brands like danelectro, beta aivin or biyang.
