Can anyone pls explain simply what effects and pedal do? And how to start out simple... (I am totally new to guitar). Must u have a good guitar b4 u start playing with effects and pedals?

I have a Marshall 15CDR amp and a cheapo strat copy, some santa fe brand I got at penisular plaza... thinking of getting an Ibanez GSA60... any advice?

Effects pedal will change the sound of your guitar, and give it the edge and expression. Normally we'd advise new learners to be confident in their elec guitar and amp first.

As your amp itself already have 2 effects, one is distortion sound, the other is reverb. These both can be use independently and together to a majority of songs already.

When you are confident, you can start by checking out what your friends have and borrow theirs to try out what kind of sounds will suit your music.

If you are covering other famous band song, most of the time, a research on the net will tell you what kind of effects the guitarist used for that song and which part.

How you will find fruitful use of the info and your playing, good luck.

Effects & Pedals do a lot of things depending which u buy. but usually in simple terms, most of them alter the sound of the guitar.

e.g.
A chorus pedal gives you a more shimmery lush sound.
A wah lets your guitar sound wail.
A distortion pedal distorts your guitar signal to make it more crunchy with more gain.
An overdrive is kinda like a mix between distorted and clean sound... gain but not as heavy.
A echo/delay repeats the note, usually in descending volumes, for a (usually) limited number of times.

You do not need a good guitar to use effects. Well, you always benefit from a really good guitar thou. :)

I haven't any idea of Ibanez guitars, but I do remember subversion mentioning better models than the GSA/GA models. Check the Gear News 2005 thread for his posts.

Thanks man, I think I will go practise more on my guitar b4 purchasing the next guitar or effects...

Erm... anyone know what to practise apart from chords?

Chromatics, just do a google search on them, but if you practise them from the beginning it will really pay off when you start to play more challenging stuff.

Try to get real familiar with your with pentatonics.

My advice is, for now, get an EFX thingy which is very versatile. Like a Roland Cube-30. It's an excellent amp, and has an on board EFX station encompassing 8 different amp types. From the all-out MESA/Boogie distortion to an Acoustic Simulator and EFX like Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo, Delay, Reverb.

I use it, and I havent bought an EFX pedal since, though I am only a Newb, and will want a proper EFX pedal sooner or later.

But yes, it is most adivsable to start simply with your guitar + amp. Get a feel for it, know what you want in your sound, then go and get the right pedal.
