guitar help (maintenance)

Strings are greatly a personal preference. First off, determine what gauge you prefer. Thicker strings, or heavier guage, have a meatier tone, but are harder to bend, vibrato etc.
It's the opposite with lighter guages, you sacrifice some tone, but they are more manageable.

More popular brands include the Ernie Ball Slinkies, the Curt Mangans, D'addarios, etc. The list goes on. I personally use Elixirs, they cost more, but they have excellent longevity.

On how to take care of your newly-acquired axe, simple.
1.) Don't drop it, don't knock it, don't subject it to any impact.
2.) Be aware of buckle-rash. That's when your belt-buckle scratches the back of your axe.
3.) Always hold the guitar by the heel. That's the place where the neck meets the body.
4.) Be more careful with the neck.
5.) Wipe down the strings with a clean clothe after each extended use.
6.) Use Fast-Fret to oil your strings.
