Ola guys,
I want to spray my own guitar. Im going for a john mayer black1 relic.
However, i have not done a relic paint job before. My first spray paibt job was a hendrix monterey pop strat. Turns out great. Now i want to try out a relic strat.

I have stripped the paint on my strat.i have also stripped off the veneer on the front and back of my strat.right now im taping off the outline of the relic paintjob.do i paibt a white lacquer on it first or just go with the black?

Thanks.

before you even start, it is good to know that relic guitars can only be done if the finishing lacquer is nitro. if you intend to stencil the relic all the way, it would most definitely turn out very unnatural.

Nitro?ive finish 2 guitars before..one is clear lacquer and other is matte lacquer..

Where can i get nitro spray cans?
Do u need to do a primer coat first ?

I'm referring to relic-ing guitars. finishing and relic-ing guitars are slightly different.

Nitro is a controlled and they don't come in spray cans. You must have a licsense to obtain it.

Primer depends on the colour you are going after. If it's supposed to be vintage correct, you just have to follow the primer colour for the relevant years.

I'm not trying to be a wet blanket here but I rather you spray more guitars compared to wasting time on a failed project. If you try rubbing sand paper against a Fender American standard, you know it is impossible to get a nice relic job done on poly / acrylic finish.
