Guitar/Amp recommendation

Hi all, have been playing acoustic guitar for a few years already. Recently decided to venture into playing electrical guitar and thus decided to buy a E.guitar and a amp during the upcoming Swee Lee sales.

Currently have a few selections on my mind for both guitar and amp but i am not sure which to settle for, so would anyone please kindly advice? :D

Those guitars that i am considering;
1) Fender Standard Stratocaster
2) Fender Standard Stratocaster HSS
3) Ibanez RG350DX

Amps that i am considering;
1) Peavey Studio Pro 112
2) Fender Pro Jr
3) Epiphone Valve Jr

Budget would be around $1.5k - $1.7k in all.

Awaiting your replies. Thanks!

if you aren't too keen in embracing the fiddly locking + floating bridge mechanism (Edge III), the ibanez RG350 should be left out. consider another ibanez with a non-locking vibrato bridge instead, eg: SA series

Or if you really want an RG, get RG321? I HIGHLY RECOMMEND EPI VALVE JR., but then again you need a cab to go with it, unless you wanna buy the combo (imho, get another cab instead...)

wow...i respect u for the fact u did much research before asking. yes i recommend epi valve jr. the head n cab set is $600+ before discount.. maybe u'll get it for $350? the 50% applies to amps also, no?

Thanks for the prompt replies.

Okay, i'll most probably settle for the epi valve jr judging from the positive response here. Is it sold as a head + cab set or as a combo unit?

Guitar wise, im still pretty much inclined towards the Strat, having played my friend's strat before and i like the feel of it.

Considering that im not really into metal, should i go for the Standard strat or the Standard strat HSS? Also what's the list price of the standard strat? i can't seem to find the price on Swee Lee's website.

swee lee has both the combo and head+cab. the combo is cheaper of course. take note if they have stock or not.

HSS for versatility? aint sure about this. not a strat guy. =))

Yeah... I second that. The only other question which you probably need to answer and let us know is the type of music you're gonna be playing.

HSS gets my vote for a little bit more versatility. I'll pass on the RG cos the trem's gonna give you enough headache and a lot less playing time!

Another important point is that whatever you choose, pls pls try it out and listen . Tell the shopkeeper the choices you have in mind and then try all the combination. (not many as you've already by this time narrow it down to 2 guitars and 3 amps) Your ear is the best judge. Never forget that.....

I want to try out an electric guitar too! been playing acoustic for, say, 1.5years? thinking of getting a timbre sr200 from standard value and prob a Vox DA5 since i only need a bedroom/practice amp. don't intend to use it for gigging.

any other recommendations? i'm quite set on the timbre sr200. it's just the amp that i can't decide on.

hahaha.

Multitude of efx, small and cute size makes it a good bedroom practice amp.

Mr the_muses. if i were u, with ur choice, i would hav been less set on the guitar. ok i cant say anything about the guitar, but the amp is a great choice for beginning electric guitarists. in just 14 words, mr naviros has described more than enough.

thanks sub! i read your review on it too. and i also thought it looked really cute. alright. kinda set alr then!

what are the main differences between the standard strat and the american standard & american deluxe?

Standard Strat: Mexican made, ceramic pickups (do not sound as good), cast iron tremolo units, ping tuners, gigbag
American Std: US made, alnico pickups, better hardware in general, hardcase
American Dlx: Pretty much the same as the Std except for the noiseless pickups, and some refinements

if you are referring to swee lee stock, they currently have the American Series, the newer American Std is not in yet.

are ceramic magnet pickups lousy? depends on your needs. if you wish for a more vintage-type tone, you are better off with something else.

first things first, i ain't a "Mr"...i am a "Ms"...haha. but no offence taken.
if you were me, which guitar would you be more set on?

if i had the moolah, i'd love a fender strat too.
but im just starting out, playing around with an electric. so...someth less harmful to my pocket?
i have an internship coming up, but you know how pathetically paid interns are...:p
