i am playing guitar for some time. Wish to learn some lead in accoustic song. Example an unplug performance let say got 2 guitar playing, one play rhythm one play lead, the one who play lead will play scale am i right? pls correct me if i say wrongly. :) What is the correct way to play scale? Do i really need to know what note am i play in the fretboard? Is there a way to remember it simple or just know the pattern? Pls advise me. Thanks

hi Shawn,

Playing the lead by scale based method is one of the method to play lead. In the most simplistic way, if u are playing a scale based melody, the notes u play usually come from the scale the song is in. Eg. in G major scale, u play along G A B C D E F#. Intermediate players play in various scale, combine scales or even no scale. The permutation is almost unlimited.

Yes u need to know what note u are playing on the fretboard. Normally we also memorise the scale pattern. Like major scale has the 3 notes per string pattern. Pentatonic scale has the box pattern etc etc. I can't detail the patterns here, but I guess u can find it on the internet.

There is no simple way though to play good lead :) You need to know the patterns, the note, how the notes sound relative to each other etc. It takes time, not overnight. So take it slowly and step by step. Start with knowing your fret notes and some simple scale patterns like major scale and pentatonic. Enjoy your playing!

Rock on,

i kno of some ppl who improvise without the scale-based method.but their hearing is v. gd.tt's how they can do it man...
to play lead,u need to hav either gd aural skills or music thoery.best is to kno them both. ther r some( like billy sheehan) who juz play by ear n juz solo throughout the whole song...

*sheehan may be a bass player, but i was juz using him as an example...

oh yeah, btw, wen u learn scales,i think it's better if u memorize wat's the notes in the scales rather than the shape...
