Good Musicians. Are they born or made

I play the guitar but i got bored and read the how to drum section. I saw this thread Good Drummers are they born or made?

Well its extend this questions to all instruments.

Sometimes i wonder to myself. Is it because i dont have the talent? Or is it because i,m not wroking hard enough. I believe that talent , potential and hardwork are 3 different things. potential would be your maximum ability . talent would be the ability to pick things up quickly , stuff like that. hardwork is hardwork.

I think its safe to say. most of the time , people with talent also have high potential. Although it is only true to a certain extent. But i,m sure most of us have thought of this question. Am i really cut out to do this? Of course i,m also sure most of us have given ourselves the answer. it doesnt matter, even if i,m not cut out to do this, i,ll work harder than the rest.

An example of this would be Rock Lee and Neji from naruto
Rock Lee was hopeless at ninjutsu ( ninja techniques ) and genjutsu ( illusionary techniques ). His taijutsu ( hand to hand combat ) was just average.
However Neji was a genius at everything.
Rock Lee aspired to be able to beat neji but he never could, So , he trained everyday in taijutsu only. He would run countless amounts of laps. practice his kicks etc.

Soon he became stronger than most ninja but still he couldnt beat Neji.
The manga is still ongoing and it hasnt been made clear who is the stonger one.

Of course another issue would be. What is my peak, it is arguable that your maximum can change with practice and such but we,re human thus there will always be a maximum.

But with reference to real life. Can a hardworker beat a genius?

Last of all some may say. hmm the time taken to write this post could be used to practice but we all need breaks ya ?

eh jimi hendrix joined quite a number of bands back then. but even though the band was good, it never worked out. so what he did was sit in his studio and improvise with literally anyone who walked in.

Finally more people knew about him and he became famous.
Hmm true enough that is a show of hardwork.

But it could be hardwork + talent ya? cos we cant rely on just one factor alone.

seriously, don't think too much. focus on your practices. hah' :P

Success is 99% hardwork, 1% inspiration.

Edison Thomas is an example.

and, Manga are just bull-shit.

don't give urself that mindset that ur not one of those "born talented" ones. it might be true but don't discourage yourself by thinkin that you've reached your peak. there's nothing more u can do because ur just not born talented.key word is practice. to me the only musical talent someone might be born with is singing as it's already in their voice. of course u have to learn to control it. if anyone here believes they're born talented. pls state ur info and ability. i want ur brain.

Hmm.

When I comes to genius... sometimes I believe it has to be discovered, not so much that the moment he / she exits the womb and can already shred like malmsteem. Not that Malmsteem is a genius  (let's not debate that)

However.. the question "can hard work beat genius", makes me want to further question the motive for someone who works hard to go all out to defeat someone with innate talent. Why can't we all be humble, and just work hard... must go out and boost ego meh?

Anyway, my personal belief is that each and everyone of us here on earth are talented to a certain degree, and we need work hard to take our skill set to the next level, instead of waiting around hoping for a miracle that suddenly mkes us "more talented".

I guess...In this modern times, its not just about being a good musician. You gotta know how to gain publicity, know how to spread your name.

And, IMO, potential=3%, hardwork=97%.

No point being brainiac if you don't get out there and change the world(this dones'nt just apply to being a musician)

Hard Work = 100 - (n - p^2)% where n refers to the amount of practice done during daylight hours and p refers to the amount of time spent on this website per day.

Talent = Hard Work - (x / y)^p % where x refers to the amount of posts you have, y refers to number of months since you joined, and p refers to the amount of time spent on this website per day.

Potential = (Hard Work + Talent) / [0 if p > 2, 2 if p = 2, 1 if p < 2]

wait untill you see some 12 year old prodigy play...you'll feel like giving up i tell you, hahaa, but luckily they're one in a million

Sounds like people trying to rationalise and say hard work can get you to the level of a true virtuoso.

Nope, upper class of musicians = talent & hardwork. Something some people just can't get there no matter how hard you try.

Just do your own thing. Every one with their different strengths. Some can play exceedingly fast and furious - props to them. Others stir emotions with 3 notes - props to them. Others just enjoy covering lots of songs and do it well - props to them. Other can compose and stuff - props to them.

Personally, I just do my own thing and work out my music, my way.... if you find you can't play a particular style, just move to something else.

And glissceule. hahaha... nice try helping out.

In my opinion if you've the time to question whether you're talented or not, you're not spending enough time a) practicing, b) loving the music for music's sake c) thinking about better approaches to help you improve.

The whole talking about talent is ultimately useless and unconstructive. Does it matter if people told you that you were the most untalented musician in the world? What matters is passion. Its what makes people "talented". When you love the music for what it is, and have a burning need to play, you will automatically find ways to make yourself good at it. What others consider hard work will feel like play to you. If you are not passionate about your music you should probably consider doing something else because theres no point in doing anything half-arsed.

Besides, most people don't practice/listen/learn/do whatever they have to enough for their talent to kick in and actually make a difference in their music. Then they're content to blame their state of mediocrity on being less untalented. Good for them anyhow, its sure easier putting the blame on talent than working on actually being a good musician.

good athletes- are they born or made?

some people are born with better genetic makeup for certain sports than others.

yet those with no genetic makeup at all can still generally be relatively competent- a bulky fat man can eventually run a marathon, but would be better off specializing in say, the shot put.

hard work makes a difference- an athlete with less good genes who trains harder will generally do better than a physically gifted but less experienced/trained athlete.

of course, the greatest athletes in the world are those who are both born with it and who work for it. but it doesn't stop normal human beings from enjoying a good run.

this entire analogy applies too, to music.

look at visa hes 16 years old only and so far CAVE has been quite a success = )

Potential = (Hard Work + Talent) / [0 if p > 2, 2 if p = 2, 1 if p < 2]

formula of the day.

Eh Eldarion you seem to be getting me wrong i,m not saying that i,m on the verge of giving up or anything. the purpose of this thread is for people to express their views on this topic. I didnt start this thread to plead for help or give myself an ego boost.

The mental and emotional condition also affects his phrasing and stuff. One Clear Example. Niandra Lades and usually a T shirt by John Frusciante. Genius stuff from a disturbed man.
