the old nitro laquer finished necks are particularly bad for this.
I had a '76 strat that was horrible on stage for this reason. Can't quite remember who it was that told me, but basically the advice I got was similar to the previous posts.
Cut the finish back a little with a very fine grit wet'n'dry paper. Don't cut back to bare wood, just scuff the lacquer finish up until it gets smooth.
Now here's the big tip - Silicon spray lubricant. Hardware stores have it. Once a week, I would spray the back of the neck with this stuff. It dries in seconds.
I would also recommend washing your hands with really warm water. I used to carry sand soap (it was called "Solvol")with me to gigs and washed my hands before going on. In a pinch, yes, a bit of talcum powder will get you through.
It is possible to have the neck replaced or refinished with a satin finish - but sandpaper and silicon spray is way cheaper. It wont ruin the cosmetic finish if done moderately.
