care to tell us why?
my experience has mainly been with Fender basses, and i'm very happy. however, one of my bass players, brian minato also has a great LP tone.. very deep and resonating, almost dub like, but it sounded great on Sarah McLachlan's dancier and ballad-like tracks.

i think both basses are in their own class.

for LP basses their tone inclines more towards the woofy deep, resonating tone. DC Talk fans will know that Otto Price uses a LP bass on their records.

Jazz basses are the bread and butter for most bass players, their tonal range is huge thus finding it's place in the arsenal of most bass players.

i think if you would give me a choice, i'd go for jazz basses, not saying that LP basses are lousy, but just a preference. Some others may choose the LP over the jazz and i think that's equally cool.

at the end of the day, it's not the bass that defines the bass player but the bass player that defines the bass.

i don't believe there's such thing as a 'better' bass. it's like comparing apples with oranges. they are both fruits but they have different qualities that make it completely distinguishable.

i personally like the fender jazz bass. i find that the tone has alot of character. not overly bassy or hot, and you can really hear the instrument speak. unfortunately, i've never had the opportunity to play with a gibson LP :(

+1 shinobi ...

neither do i believe in THE bass. construction matters, and i take that into consideration, but among major brands out there .. it all boils down to a matter of taste ...

like your coconut milk in your laksa and the taste of hum in your mouth

its for the player to prefer. but gibson makes guitars better than bass and fender does both good i guess. and yeah that les paul bass is cool. but i still do prefer fender.

i don't agree that gibson makes guitar better than bass, it's just because people don't really use them that's why it seems they make guitars better than bass.

gibson has the tobias name under them (the first name trademark of Michael Tobias) so those basse are really a killer. Some people said that when Michael Tobias left Gibson, they never really managed to solve the neck joint stability issue they had with the original toby basses.

+1 to Exin!

I am a proud daddy of 7 gibsons both guitars and basses which I totally adore and use like mad. I had the same number of Fenders which I siold away but due to personal preference of course.

I suspect Gibsons are also less exposed because of price barriers but they have never dliuted their classic bass designs at all through the years!

+1 to exin, you should check gibson sg bass that's used by cream's bass player, jack bruce, the sound kinda cool

thanks for the knowledge of gibsons bass. i didnt really know much about gibson bass. i prefer gibson guitars and fender bass. haha
