Mark why did you have to play so late =/ I came from 7 to 9.

Didn't get a chance to see you play =/

I came late because the promoter Riz (genius as he is) puts me at the last set. Had a few meetings prior

I made alot of people dance this time hehe. Fun fun

Also if anyone is interested in DJing for Ghast 4 do let me know
No payment though as the appreciation of myself and the people in the community should be enough :P
Seriously though, do contact me if you're interested.

Riz> Tell your best friend we're coming at 4pm to soundcheck. i'm going to bring poker cards just in case he's gg to be 1 hour late. and save either the 8pm/9pm slot for me.

well. on a bit of a serious note,

since the mid 90s in Singapore, the local dark alternative scene (gothic/industrial) has not exactly been up to par with the other sister subcultures like metal, punk and emo. In the last few years Singapore Goth Covenant, an NPO collective has been meeting great difficulty just recruiting new following and years before that, the two cultural centres for goth activity were an obscure #gothic channel on galaxynet and far east plaza. Insurgence of Japanese visual-kei has caused the aesthetic culture of goth in asia to mutate slightly and we find that the EAG (Elegant Aristocratic Goth) type dress has become impractial and less socially recognised. Metal has its deterrant, antiestablishment vibe which dissuades non-believers from mocking, punk simply doesnt care and Emo is rooted with alternative rock which has a very large social presence. Goth is a defeatist / nihilistic, self-victimising subculture to begin with and the public is not sufficiently educated to be able to distinguish its tenets. For instance, fetish culture (BDSM- and trust me, I'm part of that scene too) is a totally different area.

From running gothic events in Australia, I learned that many of the subscribers of the culture dont fully understand it either and lean towards musical and screen icons such as Marilyn Manson and Tim Burton's works to describe... well... mainly what they are wearing. Even worse are those who are merely in it to assimilate aspects of the culture rather than endorse it; the most retarded are those who just want to have sex with a gothic girl. Yes, F.U.

Musically, consider market saturation of particular genres and you'll notice that most gothic music has been eliminated off the airwaves completely = KMFDM, Nitzer Ebb, Lacuna coil, Tristania, Therion, VNV Nation, Das Ich, Funker Vogt. Even a major international gothic icon like Nine Inch Nail's album launch went by without a blip on the local media radar.

Given weather conditions and demographic fluctuations, we're doing pretty well. I did two haven shows earlier this year in Home club and even helped Rock Star Collective when Interlace from Sweden (major industrial act) came down to play - it was the biggest thing singapore goth has known, but a depressing turnout. A 3rd Ghast means that we are picking up some speed here. Being marketing manager of Gashaus also helps too as most other venues would balk at this concept completely (Vintage included! They have taken more than 2 weeks to get back to a simple proposal)

Close to ten years ago, I tried to spearhead the SDAM (Singapore Dark Alternative Movement) but it was moot as most of the main players of our generation have gone abroad for study or employment, some never to return due to cultural estrangement or finding it a much better clime to endorse dark alternative agendas.

All in all, this is a pretty hard and idealistic thing to be doing- revitalising an entire subculture. So please, have some respect for Riz. He's doing something great.

Love,
Saito
