Getting Gigs!

Hi Everyone!

I am glad to chance upon such a cool and fantastic forum for all aspiring S'pore artistes!

I would like to ask a question. Anyone out there looking for a place to perform? Would any of you like to have a list of places in Singapore where you can go to perform?

I was thinking of compiling a list of places to perform so that it is easier for bands to get information about GIGS... but i don't know whether it is worth doing so... can anyone help me?

SUPPORT LOCAL TALENT! :)

musiomaniac, most venues do not LOOK for bands. it is the organisers/promoters that look for bands.

yep. venues either have their own promoters, or promote their venues to external promoters- these are the guys who look for bands.

Haha....But how the organisers get to book the venue is another question....

Anyone can answer that?

Orchard?

Venue rental depends on certain things: size, type of venue (public space vs. indoor - club, etc.) and location.

Sometimes you'd need to rent, sometimes you don't.

Case-to-case basis...

I was rather thinking about compiling a list of places that bands could perform in and their addresses, numbers and other details so that bands can call to arrange an audition or perhaps send them a demo.

I have friends who have been calling me to see if i knew anywhere in s'pore 1st timers can gig. I told them Ben & Jerry's at cathay. :) (bet you guys know this famous ice cream parlour!) The reason behind is that i know that the boss is looking for talented bands out there and doesn't mind giving 1st timers a chance.

I would make sure that there is at least a 50% chance that the bosses of the list i provide will let you play there. The otehr 50% will be based on the bands themselves.

Bands might find this information useful right?

Oh wait a quick addendum -
Ben and Jerry's Jam Space is a noble concept, but just like venues that put on Band competitions out of the blue (Chinatown Caberet for example... super suspicious) I had a nagging feeling that it could be a method of getting cheap/free entertainment while maintaining a guise of 'supporting local music'. Their intentions could be genuine, but IMHO one should pay a professional price for a professional job. EVEN if they are first timers- if its financially impossible, at least a statement that participation is VOLUNTARY should be made clearly

You might want to note that you also cant go very loud in the Cathay (eliminating alot of the harder genres and considering that now 70% of the bands around are LOUD, that is counterproductive to development)

I am part of the management of Gashaus and we are also starting a Live music Magazine (local) to facilitate exactly what you are trying to do :) Even more reason to give me a holler yeah?

I know lah. But I running out of budget for staff. If you want to help, its probably going to be freelance rate bro

When might the magazine be comin out?! Maybe you should try doing a website along with it... its more convenient...

Please do let me know when the magazine is out. It will be helpful to my and my friend's band should this magazine give us information about possible places to play.

But for now... I'll just have to keep shopping for places to play. Not easy you know... esp when many pubs do not want 'loud' music. I understand what saito means...
