I would like to play mostly shred/metal/instrumental rock. If its a new guitar, preferably a superstrat with a thin neck.

Any suggestions? Or should i just upgrade the pickups and Edge III on my current guitar?

First guitar, no idea what was good for its price back then, just went for something looking nice.

try out some of the cheaper tube amps... you would probably like a boost / overdrive pedal and a delay pedal too, for the genres you play

If i get a new RG Prestige with dimarzio evos, how much would it affect my sound? Trying to like settle for 1 new guitar and 1 new amp once and for all, so i dont need to keep upgrading along the way

get an ibanez PGM - MIJ
it has a thinner neck back countour than a regular ibanez wizard neck..
u can shred it like paul gilbert

with this model u can do everything..rock metal blues jazz

Currently 1000 from parents plus birthday+christmas present for this year, possibly about 1500, bringing my budget to about 2500 in total.

Since my budget has dramatically increased, any decent suggestions on achieving a nice shred tone (vai or gilbertish)?

Hi there, i think it is hard to give any suggestions if u do not have anything in mind regarding the tone u r looking for, or the musical style or feel u r trying to achieve. Honestly there isnt a "once and for all" solution to solve ur search of the "holy grail" tone, and honestly having 2.5k may not even be enough (many guitarists have spent much much more and still not finding the sound they r after).

Perhaps u can start by thinking of any guitar heros that u may wanna emulate, check out what r the stuff (eg. amps, guitars, efx etc) they r using or other alternatives if their original gear is out of your budget.

So i guess u should first think hard on what u want to achieve and try to work around the budget u have. By doing that, u can maximize ur budget and not let it go to waste especially since this is a gift from your parents who worked hard for it. Cheers mate.

get a Fender Strat.....and some chops while at it.

Ized since he is looking for vai or gilbert shred tone.....a strat may not be wat he is looking for, BUT a fat strat is still a great base to build on if he has no exact idea of wat he really wants. My suggestion would be an ibanez rg prestige with his choice of dimarzio pickup upgrades lah, since both vai and gilbert use rg.....but imo just a guitar upgrade alone is still not enough........
